- This is the 2014 State of the Union address, in which absolutely nothing of note happened.
Tonight, President Obama will give the State of the Union at 6 p.m. Seattle time. We already know much of what the president will propose: two free years of community college, a call for affordable high-speed internet access, and a plan to raise taxes on the 1 percent to provide tax breaks to the middle class. We can expect, for the first time, a really positive State of the Union address from Obama; he’ll be boasting about a lower unemployment rate, an improved economy, and possibly lower gas prices. Does he have any other surprises for us? Is Cuba becoming the 51st state? (Doubtful.) Could he unveil a surprise push for campaign finance reform? (That would be nice.) Is this when he’ll finally announce the socialist plot to take everyone’s guns away that Republicans have been warning us about for years now? (Christ, I hope so.)
Join me here on Slog tonight at 6 p.m. for a live-Slog of the State of the Union and Iowa senator Joni Ernst’s Republican rebuttal. If we can find Rep. Curt Clawson’s Tea Party rebuttal to the rebuttal, we’ll probably live-Slog that one, too, although Clawson isn’t exactly the draw that Michele Bachmann or Rand Paul were. It’ll be just like Sunday’s live-Slog of the Seahawks/Packers game, only hopefully with fewer turnovers and more victorious bicycle rides.
