Rebuild is a fairly goofy but fun strategy game that has you defending—and slowly expanding—an embattled encampment that’s surrounded by zombie hordes.
Hands down the best thing about Rebuild is that they give each of your survivors a name, which pulls off the unlikely feat of creating an emotional attachment to some bits in your browser cache. Are you sure you want to send “Wiggles” Mitchell on a mission to scavenge the mall with Chastity Meyers? Maybe you should send along “Jalapeno” Clarke, too, just to be safe. Who can forget training Chloe “Oilcan” French to be a scientist, so she wouldn’t have have to risk her life on the front line anymore? Something changed that day.
You reclaim territory block by block, sending out scouts to scavenge for food, leaders to recruit survivors, and soldiers to smash zombie skulls. Scientists and builders stay inside your perimeter, while (respectively) researching zombieism cures and converting convenience stores into bars to keep your growing populace happy. (You need farms for food, but it’s churches and bars that keep your people happy. That and finding stray kittens.)

- This is your camp. Things aren’t going well at the mall.
Replay value is surprising for a free Flash game: you can win the game a few different ways, and it’s got five difficulty levels and three save slots. Fuck Monday, go kill zombies. If not for yourself, do it for the late Hugo Mishkin.
The Stranger Testing Department is Rob Lightner and Paul Hughes.

Yeah, but you have to enter your billing info up front…
Is Kamloops worth defending to the death, though?
Hey, Kat, where are you seeing that? It’s a free game, without any billing info needed. Just follow the link (http://twotowersgames.com/games/rebuild-…) then click on one the yellow buttons below that says “Play game” or “Play game in new window.”
They do have a horrifying phalanx of Google-supplied ads that look like buttons above that. And the *real* buttons take a second to load, with a little “Loading…” warning. Which is kind of sucky for a game site. I wonder if Two Towers even knows what ads Google is serving there. —Paul
Okay, just changed the link to Kongregate, which doesn’t have such shitty ads. Thanks and sorry, Kat. Two Towers sucks.
My favourite part of the game is how people get nicknames after they live through certain events. So Katy Miller became Katy “Cyclops” Miller when she lost her eye on a particularly tough mission.
I just managed to wean myself off that game, and now I just want to play it all afternoon again. Damn you, Testing Department!
Wow, how did we not notice that! It just got even better.
@2 Kamloops is a great city with great sushi restaurants, a vibrant arts scene, a vibrant First Nation culture, mostly polite cops, real strip clubs and two nude beaches. Seattle still does not have any nude beaches, our strip clubs are boring and Native Americans get murdered by our asshole cops. In Kamloops, gay and lesbian citizens can marry; in Seattle they cannot.
So um, who lives a better life with more personal freedoms?
Oh! Plus I saw the aurora borealis in Kamloops once.
Thanks for the heads up on this game — usually these silly little flash games don’t do it for me, but I am loving this one! Just enough micro-management with that emotional connection you talk about… I had to physically pull myself away from my laptop to come to work this morning because I just wanted to scout out a few more blocks, kill more zombies, and make my little zombpocalypse city safe for a few more survivors!
