Three Seattle Police officers were injured in a melee early this morning at a downtown homeless housing complex.

Just before 3 AM this morning, Seattle Police were called to an apartment building on 1st and Stewart after a tenant attacked a building staff member.

When police arrived, they found four men fighting in front of the building. One of the men was wielding a lamp. According to police, the lamp-wielding man had maced, punched and kicked the three other men in the building lobby before officers arrived.

Officers ordered the man to drop the lamp, but he fled into the building. When officers caught up with the man, police say, he turned around and attacked officers.

Police arrested the man and he was taken to Harborview. Police say he will be booked into King County Jail for assault and obstruction.

The three officers were all treated for minor injuries.

  1. @ Comte,

He was technically “armed and dangerous”, I’m surprised they didn’t zap or ventilate him. They managed to arrest him without causing any permanent disfigurement or death. This is a refreshing change from most stories where somebody high or loony attacks a cop.

  2. You know, cops get a lot of shit but stories like this illustrate to me how much they are doing a job that nobody wants and yet nevertheless needs doing. And yeah, as far as we can tell they didn’t tase the guy or kick the holy crap out of him, which any normal person would feel like doing in that situation (and which they would almost certainly get away with.)

Gotta give props to the cops if this is indeed the exceptional police non-brutality news story.

  3. @6,

The thing is, we probably don’t hear most of those stories, because most of those stories don’t end in the loon getting shot to death.

  4. One of the people he assaulted was a woman and a staff, and she is seriously injured. He hurt people because he was pissed off at other things. Dont really care about the cops, they have guns, and can press charges easier… Where the fuck “4 men were fighting” came from?

  5. The injured staff person is NOT in “serious” condition. She is very much injured, but I don’t think the proper way of explaining her injuries is by saying that it is “serious”.
While a very messed up thing that happened, I am just grateful that she is okay (for the most part) and that the tenent is in jail.

  6. Most of the people involved in this incident read Slog daily. The facts here and on the police blog are incorrect. One tenant and three staff were assaulted, followed by three cops while trying to take him into custody. A female staff suffered several head injuries, requiring emergency and follow up surgeries. Another tenant was maced by the attacker and the two other staff (one male, one female) suffered minor injuries. The tenant had been arrested and released twice within a week leading up to this event. A violent attacker with a 4 foot metal pole (that had just been a lamp) is more frightening than you’d assume; sitting at your desk reading slog.
