After last night’s packed police-accountability forum at City Hall—that is, after some folks stared down officials and some in the audience performed their theatrics and some panelists postured and other panelists struck some innovative ideas and finally everyone cheered for a fine job of moderating by C.R. Douglas—four women approached me. They were graduate students at the UW whose professor had assigned them to attend and then write about a community meeting. The condition: the meeting had to highlight some disagreement or demonstrate friction.

Well, graduate students, you got it.

Seattle’s long-awaited confrontation about SPD’s controversial behavior came to a head. Although extremely chaotic at times (the NAACP’s Jame Bible, who was invited to speak but chose not to, tried and failed to stage a walk-out), it was also cathartic and productive. There was anger but plenty of civil discussion. Several folks on the panel were outstanding—two words: Nicole Gaines!—and rolled out substantive ideas about what Seattle needs to do next. Check out Cienna’s post on the most cogent ideas that came up. Kelly O took some beautiful photos.

  1. please sign the petitions and let us all say this has got to end
the police programs given to spd and maybe other jurisdictions hire the departments and those willing to go out and choose their victims with in mind what works for them. Ian Birk was handed a assignment, the downtown police handed an assignment but then while we think “generally distorted” and say excuses like no time not now and whatever, the evidence is blatantly toxic and wants reactions. but then it has always been that one chapter gone to a past with all it had gained was still worth fighting for more and always the same things happened went in their programs signed their papers worked with them asking of course to do the right thing however, the character defects maintain they had done so and would like to play with their new toys and break heads and kill people, the idea is so blatant that this idea is looking real enough to consider what they have been doing and find out in every way possible, if the past had only shown some return from what was stolen, some from cheating, some from killing, what excuse do they need they already showed us they could lie cheat and steal and that they will support the willing with enough and more.

  2. Dominic, I thought the forum was a terrific event. Thank you to The Stranger for co-hosting it, and thanks to all of the panelists for taking the time to participate and for their thoughtful or provocative comments.
