This was the view from my hotelroom window earlier today. It was over 90 degrees in Springfield, MO, when I took this picture. Can you imagine what it costs to keep that motherfucker cool? A black office tower in a sea of blacktop parking lots?

That’s the hair salon in the lobby of my hotel. Nan-K Hair Designs. Nancy Richter, Owner & Stylist. Check out Nan-K’s stylin’ logo…

Is it even possible that anyone out there reading Slog loves a vintage unisex Rorschach blot hair salon logo more than I do? No, that is unpossible. No one could love a vintage unisex Rorschach blot hair salon logo more than I do. I love that. Love it. And then there’s this…

Nancy did Barbara Bush’s hair at some point. Now I’m not sure I’d let a woman with a hairstyle I managed to create for myself in high school through neglect alone touch my actual fully-grown head of adult hair. But Barbara Bush can make her own choices.
And this one’s just for Frizzelle…

It’s almost midnight here in Springfield, MO, and I can buy actual booze—Marker’s Mark! Vodka! Gin! Whateverclear!—in the combo supermarket/Starbucks/tavern/deli that I’m bloggin’ from. Toss in some dick and it’s pretty much Frizzelle’s definition of heaven!

Nancy looks a whole lot happier than Barbara in that photo.
and that Maker’s Mark’s on sale. buy it and find yourself a boy off grindr to invite over 🙂
I imagine in Frizzelle’s heaven (and I know in mine) there would be no closing time.
.And all the cars/jetpacks are controlled by robots, of course.
brutalism!
I have a love/hate relationship with that generation of the Bush family. Barb I like (except when I don’t). I’ve been cutting my own hair for the past 5 years. Short. One thing that pushed me in that direction was a stylist in Fresno who described herself as “an artist” when I told her I wanted a short haircut. She would have nothing to do with *my* opinion. I walked out of there looking like George Chakiris from West Side Story; not that there’s anything wrong with a 6’6″ white haired lard bucket trying to pass as a Puerto Rican gang member in Fresno, mind you. It just didn’t strike me as the kind of “doo” I wanted to strut around the parts department at IBM.
It’s sad when Bible Belt/Red States have more liberal liquor sales laws than Godless Heathen Blue State Homo Haven Washington…
@5. i brought a hairdresser in olympia a picture of what i wanted the day of my wedding. she proceeded to do the opposite and told me it would look better. i complained, she insisted, i went home and redid it myself. i didn’t tip.
cunt.
That vintage logo with the gold curtain behind: pure gold. The dream of the ’70s is alive in Springfield.
hair is a trip…
When did Marky Mark Whalberg start making booze?
I’d trade my HS hair for Dan’s any day. I’d trade my current hair for Dan’s HS hair.
Say what you want about Missouri (I do), but their “Anywhere with a roof can sell alcohol” policy, I’m a big fan of.
@6: in Wisconsin of all places, liquor stores have to close at 9pm and you can only buy beer/wine/coolers/etc at grocery stores and gas stations.
@13: Until a few years ago, you could drink in a moving vehicle down there as long as you weren’t the driver because there were no container laws in MO.
spam on aisle 10!
Nancy is dressed like Steve Irwin in that photo.
Oh! Oh! And look what the FREE MARKET did for liquor costs too!
Maker’s Mark on sale cost a whole dollar less there then the TOTALLY RIDICULOUS $29.95 it retails for here — in our nazi-loving state-run stores! (On the days when it’s not, ya know, also on sale here, that is.)
Well, hell & goddamn! I don’t know what I’ve been thinking opposing liquor privatization all along! Privatize it ALL and lets just roll around on the floor in all the money we’ll save thanks to that good ol’ free market price dropping action!!!
@17, before you get your panties in a twist, you might want to do a comparison of local tax rates, overhead and labor costs of the two locations in question, and other price inputs. You know, as a kind of scientific endeavor (as opposed to your current work in the burgeoning field of ignorant sarcasm).
Why are you in Springfield???
I miss the cheap booze at any hour. And I had my senior prom in the top floor of that building, which has been dubbed the “Darth Vader Tower.” If you go down there, across the street from that place is a statue of the man who commissioned its build, John Q. Hammons. And that statue is flattering.
You should definitely go to Martha’s Vineyard, and the Mudlounge on Walnut St. Glad you loved the Mudhouse! They’re the best. (c;
Dan, caught your speech last night with the wife ( she is a fan, now I am). Glad you had a good audience here in the home turf of the evangelicals. Come back and see us again — can’t hear the message enough times.
I’m from Michigan originally, and I can’t for the life of me come up with a good reason ever to find myself in the midwest again. (Sorry, midwest, but you are a world well lost to me.)
LOL
I bought a beer two blocks away from my house and drank it at 2 o’clock this morning in this lovely third world underdeveloped country <3
@18: So true. I am a horrible person.
The median income for a household in Springfield, MO was $29,563 in 1999. As of 1999, the median income of Seattle city household was $45,736.
Totally makes sense that they should pay the exact same amount for their “free market” booze as we pay for the same state-sponsored variety here. Totally!
(The market always finds the right price, doesn’t it?)
