East London has been declared a gay-free zone by Muslim extremists, who are also reportedly threatening to kill women who don’t conform to traditional Muslim dress:

An Asian Whitechapel shopkeeper, who is not a practising Muslim and who dresses in western clothes, said she was told to cover up last month or face a boycott of her pharmacy. When she went to the press a man came to the shop, she said, telling her, “If you keep doing these things we will kill you.” She spoke to police last week.

Muslim clerics insist these radical Muslims aren’t really threatening people—they’re simply giving “advice.”

Former Stranger news writer Cienna Madrid has been a writer in residence for Richard Hugo House, a local literary nonprofit. There, she taught fiction classes and wrote 4/5 of a book about a death-row...

  1. Yeah, of course there must be a radical racist hard right WHITE neonazi outfit for the multiculters blame and cancel a pride march through the area. Don’t be so culturally insensitive and condemn this. That would be racism. Respect these culturally diverse practices, too…not just the kind you see on a menu.

  2. Hirsi Ali could sure use some “reeducation” from the multicult about her “racist perspective”. This is just a distraction from the real enemy: white male peoples!

  3. Muslims in Western countries need to get it through their heads that the kind of intolerance that was perfectly acceptable in their home countries (“honor killings”, etc.) is definitely not OK here. Tolerance of differences is one of the cornerstones of Western society.

  4. Islam is a religion int he sense that it is a personal spirituality but it is also a political system. Islam is more like Catholicism of the middle ages than any modern religion.

  5. It’s time for the UK to join France in a ban.

Just a note for any Muslims online – it was the non-Muslim turks who imposed the whole clothing restrictions on you, they were not Islamic in origin, no matter what you may think now.

  6. Daily Express reporter: “here, I’ll pay you a thousand pounds if you’ll say he threatened to kill you”. Woman: “he threatened to kill me all right, hey, this is only nine hundred sixty”. Reporter: “you’re buying this lunch”.

    Stop reading British tabloids.

  7. I love that not only is it a patented phony tabloid story, but that Cienna managed to inflate its inflated details. It’s like she added store-bought icing to a cake made from an off-brand mix.

  8. Shopkeepers in my neighborhood have their lives threatened by loonies every day also, and for a variety of reasons.

It’s sad what will really captivate the attention of the public.

  9. Plus, I believe they’re actually investigating a right wing white guy for putting up those stickers. It appears his motivation was to cause (more) conflict between the LGBT and muslim communities in East London.

  10. Hi – former Seattleite living in London here!
The tabloids are generally horrible, but this story is unfortunately pretty indiative of what’s going on.
The one thing to keep in mind, though, is that this isn’t all of “East London” (which would be about 10 of London’s 33 boroughs), and it isn’t all of what the tabs tend to call “East London (the boroughs of Hackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets). This situation exists in parts of Tower Hamlets which have become dominated by Bangladeshi Muslims (state schools in these areas are 99% one ethnic/religious group), and where the local council politics are characterized by fights between muslim fundies and non-fundies. Johann Hari’s writing on gay rights in East London is spot on in this regard.
