This is so depressing. From the AP:

“Everything we cook with is seafood, generation to generation,” he says. “Yeah, once in a while a hamburger tastes good, but it’s not seafood.”

Until this summer, the 56-year-old had never eaten a hot dog, preferring a soft-shell crab. He speaks wistfully of what he’s missing—shrimp and grits or a crab omelet for breakfast, shrimp on a bun for lunch, some sauteed shrimp with red beans and rice for dinner.

  1. If yo cain’t ha’ a po’boy or a crawdad sam’wich, what da heck be da life for libbin?

That said, the damage from the Tea Bag Terrorist attack on America in our Gulf will cause damage for decades, thanks to Comrade Cheney and his firm Halliburton.

  2. This is really worrying–without their traditional healthy diet, the Gulf Coast residents may get really fat and suffer from a variety of other ailments–cardiac problems, diabetes, etc.

  3. @1, Will, could you please type all of your comments in idiotic racist Uncle Remus dialect from now on? It’s the only way they make sense.

  4. @6, as usual, your attempt to make yourself sound special backfires. If you have indeed lived and traveled in the South, then why on earth is your attempt to render dialect so piss-poor? Oh, that’s right — because you’re a shithead. And you’re barely able to conceal your outlandish racism.

  5. @9 It’s depressing that these folks who, depsite hovering around the poverty line, always had real food to eat don’t any more. Soft shell crab may be on fancy-schmancy restaurant menus, but I can (or could) go to the poboy shop here and get a soft shell crab basket (which has three crabs, fries, and cole slaw) for $9.95. Prices have gone up by $2 because of the shortage of seafood here. And on fresh seafood bought in the market, they’ve gone up by about $2-$3 a pound.

Seafood is a staple here. During peak season, you could get a pound of fresh-caught shrimp for about $2.99. Same thing with catfish.

@1 – I’ve lived in Louisiana for more than 8 years. I’ve traveled most of the state, except for the northern part. I’ve been to the coast, and I’ve been in Acadiana. I’ve never heard anyone speak like that. And if you traveled in Louisiana, you would know it is crawfish, not crawdads.

  6. @1 I hope you choke on a petroleum soaked soft shell crab. Please go away and take your idiotic fake written accent with you.
Haven’t you noticed that nobody likes you?

  7. Since when is fried crab (fat and cholesterol) combined with fried potatoes (fat and high GI carbs) and coleslaw (fat and sugar) REAL food? Hot dogs might be highly processed food but at least they have a better ratio of macronutrients than a lot of the other stuff poisoning America. This includes the south which had the highest rate of obesity and diabetes anywhere in the country.
