Police are investigating a sexual assault—reportedly committed at knife point—that took place early on the morning of Monday, November 14, in a man’s apartment on Capitol Hill. According to the SPD Blotter, the victim reported being sexually assaulted by a complete stranger around 1:30 a.m. in his apartment, which is located somewhere near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Roy Street.

Police interviewed the victim in the hospital. However, detectives aren’t releasing details like how the assailant came to be inside the victim’s apartment, what type of knife he was allegedly wielding, or any injuries sustained by the victim. “This is an ongoing investigation,” explains SPD spokesman Det. Mark Jamieson. Police are now searching for a suspect “30-40 years old, medium build, with short dark hair and beard.” He was last seen wearing a black jacket, a red t-shirt with a white logo, blue jeans and black gloves. He is considered “armed and dangerous.”

Police have asked anyone with information to call 911.

  1. @1, I noticed that as well

But he made it into the apartment through Manhunt, A4A, Craigslist etc.

I mean I think we know HOW the perp got into the apartment.

  2. @2 Well, we have to drum up as much sensationalistic fear as possible, right? Wait till you here it on King 5 with the sound bites from frightned neighbors.

Gosh, he was just this stranger of generic description that magically got in an apartment a raped a dude!

They raping everybody up in here! He has BLACK RAPE GLOVES ON! LOCK YOUR DOORS!

  3. And the brings up an important safety issue kids! Random hook ups from on-line websites can be dangerous. Be careful out there.

    Gay guys can be FREAKS!!!

  4. FTR – as far as suspect descriptions go this is more useful than most of the crime blotter posts. Usually they just say “Male attacks…”. Which is less than useless.

Back in the day I interned at a small local TV news station. One of my many jobs was taking the goriest news stories off the blotter and summarizing them for crime desk/weather bulletin/fishing report editor. She would redact anything offensive. And by offensive that menat among other things (anything tangentially related to a sponsor) any mention of the words “black” or “African American.” Which I suppose was well intentioned but it merely implied any crime mentioned on the news that was committed by a non-specified race just became fear code for “black guy.” It also served the purpose of lighting up the switch boards because people were seeing Mr. Unspecified EVERYWHERE. This activity delighted the station and made them feel important.

  5. @4 – you’re too late. This story was on KING 5 Monday night.

The interview was with a woman moving into the building that very day.

And while KING 5 showed the building (which is familiar to anyone who has even been on Broadway), the Slog can only name the general area.

  6. @8 Was it Action Jim!?! Was he wearing his Yellow Parka?

Well. For the victim it doesn’t really matter if was a generic cat burglar rapist or random Hispanic hookup off Craig’s List. It’s terrifying either way. Poor man. I can’t imagine. That is in my hood. So like as not I might know the guy. I hope he isn’t injured too badly.

However, in terms of a news story to be effectively utilized by the community the information has to be specific. Details like accurate physical description and how a crime happened do matter. I live near there. If this IS some dude off the street I want to know as much as I can so I can help the cops catch the asshole.

  7. @12 a quibble in comparison to the other dearths in information provided here. The man will always be Hispanic, but he can change his shirt.
