Following the zeitgeisty trend of violent robberies gripping Seattle, on Sunday, December 4, police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery near the Seattle University campus shortly after 1:00 a.m.
According to the police report, two men were walking north on 11th Avenue between Alder and Terrace Street when a stranger, described as “mid-twenties, blondish bushy hair wearing a dark snowboarding jacket,” passed them on the sidewalk. The bushy-haired man then turned around and allegedly pointed a gun at the couple and demanded “Give me your money!”
One of the victims told police he turned around—perhaps to flee?—and saw two more men standing behind him who appeared to be accomplices in the robbery.
So the victim pulled his friend behind him, yelled “No, No!” then “pulled out a dark colored folding knife and held it out towards” the gun-wielding robber.
Perhaps a stupid move—bringing a knife to a gunfight—but it worked: the suspect and his accomplices ran away southbound on 11th Avenue and the victims ran the other way—onto the Seattle University campus.
Once there, the two used a campus security phone to call for help. (The report doesn’t mention if they’re students of the university, and there’s no explanation why they used a campus security phone instead of their cell phones to call 911.) Campus security then called the police. Officers searched the area and found a man matching the suspect’s description near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Jefferson Street. When questioned by police he “stated he had a gun in his left pocket.” Police recovered a .380 Kel-Tek from the man, along with a magazine. He was then positively identified by the victims he allegedly tried to rob. Police booked him into King County Jail for investigation of robbery.

Is this an actual increase in said crimes? Or is it just the quantity dropped for a while and we’re now returning to more normal levels? Or has the population here actually increased (hint: it has) and/or has the age of likely offenders just happened to match the boomlet moving thru the population?

True story – my friend and his friend (both males) were robbed in DC awhile back, and my friend gave the gun-weilding robber his wallet. His friend opened his own wallet and took out the money and gave it to the robber. Once my friend saw that his friend had not given the robber his actual wallet, my friend had the guts to say “hey, if he gets to keep his wallet, I want to keep mine!” Believe it or not the robbed gave the wallet back, sans cash. Haha.
Although if you would like to be proper on everything, the gun name should be a Kel-Tec.
The robber was probably afraid that cheap POS Kel-Tec would blow up in his face if he tried to fire it.

reminds me of this incident which was just after a similar attempt some 23 hours before, a block and a half east, also near a pay-parking lot an w/a comparable getaway car.
The Kel-Tek is not a “cheap POS.” They actually have a pretty good reputation.

i know that area well, lived on 11th and terrace, crime is not new to the area, there have been shootings and muggings around there for years

@18 — re: mobile phone ubiquity… I had a related thought about television’s Emergency Broadcast System… Shouldn’t they figure out a way to push out text messages, um, “in the event of an actual emergency”.
Cell phone ownership in the US is about 85% of over-18s. So many millions of people don’t own one, maybe as many as 50 million (under-18s are less likely to have them).
Wow idiots, all the way around. Idiot pulled a knife on a guy who pulled a gun? What’s funny, the guy with the gun could have shot the guy with the knife then lied and claimed self defense. They are all lucky no one was hurt. If someone breaks into my home, they risk getting shot. But on the street, give them your damn money, ain’t worth getting shot over a few bucks.
@17 – yeah, that went about as far south as south could go. I recall that vividly. She was in a nasty part of town too, babeland or no , traveling in a foursome or no. Gawker did a better story on it, giving a sense of how much of a fish out of water these guys were, walking along that street at that time… and kids;, never EVER say to the armed robber “what are you going to do, shoot us?”

However, the emergency alert system in all its variants is pretty much useless outside of tornado country.
It doesn’t do anyone any good to let them know an earthquake just occurred or that some planes hit some buildings. Perhaps we’ll get some use out of it when Canada invades.
