I’m a few hours late on this one (it’s been a busy day) but we’ve gotten a few emails asking why I-5 was so backed up earlier this afternoon.

Here’s why:

According to Seattle Police, at about 1pm, a parking enforcement officer witnessed a car prowl and called police. Officers caught a man rifling through a car and when officers approached him, the man took off running. Police tried to Taser the man, but it didn’t work.

The man ran down 6th Avenue and hopped a railing down onto I-5, and was struck by a car.

The man was taken to Harborview with life-threatening injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Like I said, helluva day.

  1. Still extremely harsh to use a device that has about a 0.5% chance of killing its target for fleeing from a nonviolent crime. It would be about as harsh to start shooting people in the leg instead.

  2. @7 then don’t break into people cars and steal their shit. And no, getting tazed is no where near the same as getting shot in the leg you simple minded schmuck.

  3. I have to say, I’m with Rotten @8. I know things suck, the economy is a joke, we’re all in the shit, etc, but after the fourth or fifth break-in of my car, I lost all respect for these little shits. Realize too that chances are this guy had already hit dozens of vehicles in his career of inflicting inconvenience and expense on innocent people. You only get “observed” doing it after you’ve probably done it many times before…the luck finally runs out.

I hope he lives and all, but I got no problem with the cops giving him a good tazin’.

  4. Wow, what a doofus! He could have been booked, processed, and bailed (approx. $7,500) by now, if he’d just surrendered. If he’d actually been convicted, how much time would he have done? (Probably not more than 6 months)

This was not worth dying for.

  5. This proves that people fleeing should not be allowed on the same streets as cars. Or, this proves that an extra lane should be created for people fleeing– I’m not sure which.
