  2. Guide to eating sushi around the world: Unless you are in Vegas where they fly everything in…never eat sushi if you are somewhere that you can’t drive to the ocean in 2 hours.

  7. I take it back on the hot dish, Dan. Fried pork tenderloin sandwiches. We had ’em in Indiana, too. It’s a midwestern staple. So good. Try to get one for breakfast tomorrow or something. I miss them.

  9. Savage, an openly gay man famous for challenging bureaucratic standards of sexuality, is the UI College of Law’s annual symposium for the Journal of Gender, Race, and Justice. Often, politicians have spoken in the past; Savage will bring something new to the forum this year.

    Savage’s presentation will differ from most of his speeches, Winfield said. Normally, he will briefly speak and then take questions, allowing him to showcase the wit that made him popular. Tonight’s speech, however, will not feature a question and answer, though he will be available afterwards to sign books.

  15. Iowa in late February … probably not the time to try raw fish. But I totally second the pork tenderloin sandwiches and the Hamburg Inn. God, sometimes I miss Iowa. Just sometimes though and never, ever, ever in late February.

    And Iowa City has one of the larger gay populations in Iowa (not that that’s saying much) and you should be able to find some somewhere.

    There’s a gay bar downtown that changes its name every 6 months.

  17. Iowans eat casseroles, Balt-O-Matt, Minnesotans eat hot dish. Dan, go to Mickey`s and have a Conglomeration and a Black and Tan. For me, please. You may need open-heart surgery when you`re done, but it`s worth it. Fortunately, you`ll have one of the world`s best medical centers just a short ambulance ride away.

  22. IC is my hometown and I went to grad school there. If you’re looking for good places to eat (too late now, considering the time difference) check out the Motley Cow, Oasis Falafel, Paglia’s Pizza or Hamburg Inn. All are within a block of each other. Sushi in the midwest is never a great idea.

  26. Awww….. You’re at my Alma Mater, and probably speaking at my former employer, the Iowa Memorial Union.

    Since I attended the U of Iowa back in the bronze age, most everything I know has doubtless been torn down and paved over. But I liked the Deadwood and Joe’s Place quite a bit back in the day.

  28. I have to say, saying “because he sucks my dick” and mentioning the Daily Iowan in the same sentence amused the lot of us. The Daily Iowan has a bit of a reputation for misquotes, so he might be sucking your stick, brick, or chick in tomorrow morning’s edition. Great address. The law school administration needed some shaking up, and as one of the only gay law students I was thrilled to have a night where I actually felt this side of normal.

    BTW, the only Maid Rite in the area (the one on the strip by the Wig and Pen) has been closed for several years, though, and the building got destroyed in last summer’s flood.

    And you’re right about the sushi here. It has broken my girlfriend’s heart.

  41. Hamburg Inn is fine, but if you want a treat go down the street to Devotay for a fancier meal made with mostly local meats and veggies. Yum.
