Seems as though Microsoft isn’t weathering the (uber-)recession all that well.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer this morning informed employees that the company will be cutting more jobs — going forward with the second phase of its previously announced plan to eliminate up to 5,000 positions by June 2010. The company isn’t giving a specific number, but Ballmer’s memo says the latest move means Microsoft is “mostly but not all done with the planned 5,000 job eliminations.”
That implies the latest job cuts will affect more than 3,000 people, because the company eliminated 1,400 positions in the first phase of layoffs. Microsoft executives had hoped the economy would hold up enough that they could avoid implementing the full layoff plan.
Best of luck to you all. Good thing the governor succeeded in her plan to gut higher education funding in the state. No new taxes! No new companies! No new jobs! Should be a smashing long-term success for our state.

One of them is my ex. Sigh.
Seems like these actually aren’t “more” layoffs, just part of the 5,000 already announced?
Well Gregoire very bravely stood up for what’s right. India and China are turning out engineers by the boatload. We are in the grip of right wing mania against taxes and govt. even for things as basic as education. With democratic leaders like Gregoire being afraid to challenge the lies (absolutely no harm will come to the wealthy if they have to pay an income tax like in other states and nations), we’re just going to go the way of Argentina, and suffer a long, slow decline.
I believe the state legislature’s education/ jobs strategy could more aptly be described as:
Instead of raising taxes, let’s:
-increase unemployment: cut over 10,000 government jobs (before multiplier effect)
-increase unemployment more: reduce enrollment in public higher education
-privatize higher education: 25% cut to 4 year colleges to reduce state support below 10%, increase undergraduate tuition 30% over 2 years
-reduce k-12 education quality: cut $1 billion from k-12 while increasing class size
-more permanent tax cuts for washington businesses!: so we can cut even more next year…
A surefire recipe for success!
