Over at the Columbia Journalism Review. My favorite, as usual, is former P-I art critic Regina Hackett’s:
The Hearst Corporation has always treated the P-I like a placeholder. When there was money to be spent, they didnโt spend it here. This is the time to invent the template for the transition from newsprint to online only, and once again, the Hearst Corporation is doing it bare bones. A skeleton looks plump compared to poorly-paid online crew. I wish it well, but those people have a near-impossible task. The future according to the Hearst Corporation seems to be, journalism without journalists.
In possibly-related news, a new Princeton study finds that the disappearance of a newspaper has an immediate, measurable impact on engagement in local politics.

I thought Hearst was spending like $14 million a year on the P-I. I read it on Slog.
Wow, that Princeton study makes one shiver just a little bit. Thanks for putting it up there.
I GUESS IT’S SAD THAT THERE’S ONE LESS CONSERVATIVE DAILY IN SEATTLE.
Also, it’s not like the stranger does not already have a great news presence online.
Until we start charging neocons for posting, we’re in for a world of hurt.
Oh, and those namby-pamby “libertarians” too.
Truly, it’s tragic that a source of reliable news has been stolen from Seattle – how, quietly, this recession has slipped it under its dark black jacket and slunk out of the market with it. Local civic engagement will be poorer as a result.
Now I feel like getting drunk on some wine.
But I should note: at least we have the honest Stranger staffers here to provide us local news. We have infinite trust in their integrity and good moral character.
@12 are you tongue in cheek referring to ECB’s court disposition today? Would the Seattle P-I have covered this news? Will the new P-I cover it?
Anyone hear how it went?
Inquiring minds want to know?
Is the Stranger going to provide a post about it?
#13,
You can read about it on the other weekly blog or on the capitol Hill Seattle blog. But if you post that link here or mention it at all your post gets deleted.

Wow already posting after your court battle. Good for you girl. Maybe you can take someone else down today to make yourself feel better
Hello to all the slime-buckets who can’t stop ragging on Erica. You stink. Are journalists human to you? If you prick us, do we bleed? Anything you say at this point only points back at yourself. I loathe you. Sincerely, Regina Hackett
Except we didn’t steal anything, nor did our employer try to cover up the fact that we did in the most accessible place to discuss it.
Oh look the “Queen of Mean” Regina Hackett chimed in.
Less civic engagement by the old fogies and stupid fundies who still read dead trees is EXACTLY what this country needs. the benefits just keep compounding.
Die faster, old media, plz k thx.
