…because their sacred land is about to be sold, and because marriage is a sacred bond between one man and one woman and another woman and that other woman over there and why not that other woman and maybe that cute young woman right there:

Thousands of polygamous sect members show up for court hearing

At issue, sale of land they consider sacred

ST. GEORGE — Thousands of FLDS members gathered at the St. George Courthouse Friday for a hearing on the proposed sale of land they consider sacred.

Third District Judge Denise Lindberg agreed to hold the hearing in southern Utah so that members of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints could share their views about how the United Effort Plan Trust has been managed since it was put under state oversight in 2005…

Way to protect the sanctity of marriage in your own back yard, assholes.

  1. Or more precisely, like saying Mel Gibson and his dad are not Catholics. They might be over the top, but they’re yours, LDS! (or, in Mel’s case, Rome).

  2. @3. Because they think there’s a prophesy that there will be a temple built on it some day.

Paul… I went to that link expecting it to have something to do with Mormons and gay marriage. It seems like it’s just a lawsuit about some land and, that’s it.

  3. How about: “FLDS Mormons are not the same Mormons who bankrolled Proposition 8?”?

Let’s not allow silly things like facts to get in the way of our Mormon-bashing…

  4. @1: If they can’t control this offshoot of their religion that is pretty flagrantly violating their precious sanctity of marriage, what gives them the right to protest gays marrying in California?

@3: Some prophecy or something. It’s bullshit.

  5. @4,7: not that the FLDS would be more approving of gay marriage. They’re just insular and not as financially successful as the LDS.

Plus, that comment makes the mainstream LDS look even worse – at least the FLDS keeps to themselves instead of exerting their spiritual influence where it has no business.

  6. If they can’t control this offshoot of their religion that is pretty flagrantly violating their precious sanctity of marriage

You are aware that bigamy is illegal, yes? And that the LDS forbade its practice before Utah ever became a state?

Why are you posting misleading crap and forcing me to defend Mormons?

  7. You know, in this whole Mormon/prop 8 thing, I just now realized: How the fuck do Mormons think they have any business condoning who people can and can’t marry? I mean, these are the guys that the government came down on for “ruining the sanctity of marriage”. They’re the old pros! They should be the ones says, “hey, you go California. Marry whoever you want!”

Is this the general feeling? Am I late to the game?

  8. According to “Under the Banner of Heaven”, the FLDS organization has fought on the same side as gay rights activists in broadening the definition of marriage.

  9. No. Saying “FLDS aren’t Mormons” is closer to saying that “radical Muslims aren’t regular Muslims.” FLDS are a cuckoo offshoot. And for Mormons to think you’re cuckoo takes some real cuckoo-ery.

  10. My father is FLDS and my mother is Mormon. I’m obviously bred to be a crazy person, which is why I’m not going to spin the wheel and reproduce. I can’t pass that shit on to another generation.

  11. @15 I guess it depends on your definition of ‘mormon’ They’re fundamentalist mormons the way 5 noted that there are fundamentalist catholics. Mama church might not approve in either case, but what else are you gonna call them? Jews for Jesus? Joe Smithites for banging 10 broads at a time?

I mean, I want to disown those nutty Jewish bastards that are so blinded by their piety that they don’t see the harm they’re doing in expanding settlements into Palestinian land. But you get nuts in any organized religion, and each religion’s got to own up to its nuts.

  12. Anyone know if Big Love is coming back on the TV? I can’t hear anything about FLDS folks without picturing them all acting like a crazy Chloe Sevigny.

  13. it’s just sloppy reporting, and I wasn’t defending either side. When this site has been talking about “Mormon’s” every single other time it has been the LDS church. This time they are talking about a radical offshoot whose members have most likely been excommunicated from the LDS church for practicing polygamy. There’s plenty of other, better, ammunition than this blindly thrown rock from your google alerts.

  14. Since plural marriage is illegal these folks “spiritually marry” after the first, legal marriage. These extra wives are considered single by the state and when they have children are then considered unemployed single mothers. these women often apply for public assistance, food stamps and Medicaid. All of the family money is then pooled and becomes quite a considerable amount. Personal expenses are low since most clothing is home made and all meals are home-cooked with food raised in their own gardens. The money saved is used to buy land and stocks. It is a huge welfare scam and these folks need to lose this land and the proceeds should go back to the public they defrauded.

  15. A church is an organization that you belong to. You don’t just say “I’m a Mormon”; you have to belong to a congregation. FLDS people DO NOT BELONG TO THE MORMON CHURCH. They just don’t. They aren’t allowed in the fucking temples. Mormons HATE them, more than they hate the gays. As Postum points out, they’ve been excommunicated. They’re just plain NOT MORMONS. Even you, Carollani, just used “Mormon” to distinguish between them and regular LDS.

I know you think Mormons are kooky, and they are, but you’re going to get absolutely nowhere if you attack other persecuted minorities. That’s what Mormons are, you know. Attacking them is not going to win you any converts, none at all. Protest FOR your rights, not AGAINST them, and you might get somewhere.

  16. calm the hell down, fnarf. The last comment that could even be interpreted as mormon-bashing was maybe Paul at 8. All I’m saying is that Mormon is a term that covers all churches of LDS heritage; the same way Jewish covers orthodox, reform, reconstructionist, etc congregations; the same way christian covers presbyterians, quakers, catholics, etc.

No ONE denomination has the right to fully disown another from its religious heritage. I don’t think anyone here has a problem telling the difference between LDS and the FLDS. NONETHELESS, they’re part of the same religious tradition, as they both use the book of MORMON as a fundamental religious text.

  17. #25 – another fundamental religious text of the LDS? The King James bible. So, accordingly we should group every religious group together since… The Nicene Creed? Jesus? Moses?

Folks are unintentionally (I hope) sounding like those guys punching taxi drivers for being terrorists. Go do something good.

  18. You guys are missing the point of the post:

the United Effort Plan Trust has been managed since it was put under state oversight in 2005…

See, the government of Utah, mostly controlled by members of the Mormon church, has a say in how polygamists manage their private property. Therefore, the state–i.e. for all intensive purposes the Mormon church–hypocritically tolerates marriage that’s not between one man and one woman.

  19. @25 “No ONE denomination has the right to fully disown another from its religious heritage.”
The Protestant Reformation begs to differ. I think Henry VIII has a few thoughts on that as well.

  20. How about: “FLDS Mormons are not the same Mormons who bankrolled Proposition 8 but they rape and abuse women and children so we don’t like them anyway.

Oh, and about them not being real Mormons…how come every time law enforcement tries to shut them down the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ LDS goes out of it’s way to see they stay out of prison? Hmmm? How come any politician who vows to put an end to the abuse of FLDS, regular Mormons go out of their way to see that person isn’t re-elected?

  21. my original point was that it looked like ol’ Paul was saying “as relating to their support for Prop 8, of which we have dedicated most of our coverage to, here’s another reason to hate the Mormon’s/LDS church and their wishy-washy marriage ‘thing’ “. He was wrong, there are plenty of other reasons to be pissed at both of these religions, but the FLDS church sure as fuck doesn’t take their orders from the LDS church, and vice versa.

Should I bitch to Dan about what Wm. Steven whatever-the-fuck down at the Mercury does? Those two are a lot more closely related.

Paul showed how little thought and research went into this kneejerk post at #8. It cheapens the efforts of people ON YOUR OWN STAFF who ARE actually trying to figure out the best next move.

but yeah, the underwear things from Kelly O are funny, and Chloe Sevigny is hot.
