  1. Okay, this has got to be a put-on, because, if it’s not, these people have some really fucked-up intimacy issues – inanimate objects don’t have genders, they aren’t sentient, and they don’t express or reciprocate emotions.

At best these would appear to be rather extreme cases of classic fetishism, and at worst, well, all I can say is, “lady, that hunk of steel has got to be the worst excuse for a dildo I’ve ever seen.”

  2. It is strange but I guess if you cannot or are unwilling to express intimacy and affection towards people you will find some outlet for these feelings. While this is perhaps the most extreme end, is this that much different from people who fall in love with cartoon animals?

  3. SO FUCKING WHAT! Way to go freaks. I mean really. I wouldn’t want these people raising kids or for that matter having even the possibility of getting knocked up. The fact that they are content is cool as well. How many hetero or gay couples are unhappy. The archer is weird as shit I will admit, sleeping with a bow. Then again i have seen women masturbate with guns and Wii remotes. But if we are going to except alternate lifestyles on the basis that it causes no harm and it is consensual then by all means that hunk of metal and concrete is free to fuck. The ultimate question is however, if it is property of another individual can you be sued or prosecuted for sexual assault or indecent behavior.

  4. @11:

Exactly HOW does one solicit the consent of an inanimate object?

And I think you want us to “accept (these) lifestyles”, not “except” them, which would mean prohibiting them, right?

I’m not saying these people don’t have a right to be as nutty as my Aunt Laura’s Christmas fruitcake, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking this isn’t anything but an extreme behavior, and one perhaps indicative of some other, more serious underlying psychological issues.

At least the guys hooking up with their “real dolls” are fetishizing over an object that’s been highly anthropomorphized; these people appear to be incapable of even managing that modicum of human interaction.

  5. why don’t you buy it, dan? they seem pretty genuine. and the parallels between the stories of people who, apparently, hadn’t met before make it seem weirdly systematic.

  6. dr. oliver sachs should write a book about these people. he should title it THE MAN WHO MISTOOK HIS HAT FOR A WIFE.

ok, i’m done poking fun at these poor people now.

  7. Jesus! Now I have to worry about my daughter falling in love with her sippy cup? Yet another thing to add to the list of ways I can screw my kids up..

  8. No doubt about it, this is a real paraphilia. I’ve seen articles about it in legitimate psychiatric journals (Archives of Sexual Behavior, Volume 27, Number 4, 1 August 1998 , pp. 331-359(29)) and I am fascinated by it.

As weird as it is, I don’t really have a problem with it. Other people’s sex lives are their own business unless they are causing harm. These people seem fairly harmless to me.

  9. ‘There is no such thing in life as normal.’

This is actually kind of eye-opening for me. It just struck me that people are just built to connect to something (no matter what), and even though most of us wind up filling that need by connecting to someone of the opposite sex, there are so many people out there that wind up, for one reason or another, connecting to something other than that.

It seems weird, but it’s just fulfilling that human impulse, even if it’s not biologically consistent with the instinct. It made me rethink things.

    Interesting post.

  10. Yes, this is real, in as much as it is real in the minds of these people. It is a well-documented phenomena (and since this is a reasonably well-known documentary about an alternative sexuality, Dan, I’m surprised that you haven’t run into it before!) that some psychologists are trying to get placed in the next DSM.

  11. Monty, end panel, in today’s Seattle Times:

I once had a stormy, six-month relationship with Uma Thurman that, aside from 38 passionate messages I posted on her fan site, took place entirely in my imagination.

  12. Wow, I kneeeew that Amy girl had Asperger’s. really interesting if you know anything about Asperger’s and their obsessions with really specific things. It seems like that characteristic taken to the extreme.

i have to say though, the way the archer put the oven mitt on that bow was a little creepy…

  13. i know!! the oven mit…
this is what happens when people (who would normally be lesbians) are made to feel so uncomfortable about their own sexuality and have intimacy issues. this is hard to believe. every one of those women were socially inept. and guillotine lady i think is more of a fetishist. also, i found it interesting that the women had “male” objects when clearly that may be the only way they would be attracted to a “male”.
    where’s part 2?

  14. I don’t think there’s anything weird at all about this. How many times have we laughed at the idiots who scream that gay sex sex is fucked up, or due to problem childhoods, or just plain “unnatural”? You laugh at them, because they have no other reasoning other than it is different, and different is automatically wrong and scary.

  15. I think they all have Asperger’s (an autism spectrum disorder) and they were victims of sexual assault. People with Asperger’s have a hard time relating to other people and maintaining relationships with them. They also have a tendency to obsess over objects (although not necessarily in a sexual way). Like cards, marbles, or shirts. (My mother and Aunt work in a group home with some of them and other handicapped persons and we’ve seen some odd stuff).

Asperger’s combined with traumatic sexual assault (that went untreated with counseling) may produce some weird behaviors. And claiming that a hot bridge or really sexy picket fence is psychically telling you it loves you is pretty darn weird.

  16. #31, you’re wrong- the first woman definately does not have Aspergers. And as far as weird, I must agree that most religious folks have far stranger beliefs than this. All matter is formed from the same stuff. Just as musicians “hear” music we cannot, and brilliant (often autistic) mathematicians “see” equations we cannot, these folks are on a wavelength where they feel an interaction with structures. These structures have mass, exert gravitational pull on other objects, and exchange heat with the OS when they touch it. Live is so much bigger than our stupid little monkey brains can comprehend. I agree with #30- it’s not *that* weird!

  17. “I wouldn’t want these people raising kids or for that matter having even the possibility of getting knocked up.”
Will personally agree to that one. Every tolerance should have it’s borders. Archer sleeping with a bow is far beyond these borders in my opinion. GL all
