In an interview with the local Fox affiliate in Salt Lake City, Hatch stated his support and past work for religious freedom. “So, if the Muslims own that property, that private property, and they want to build a mosque there, they should have the right to do so,” said Hatch.

Hatch is a Mormon, though, so he doesn’t understand the Constitution like real Americhristrians do. Real Americhristrians know that the whole “Freedom of Religion” thing is meant to be applied only to people like them. Duh.

In other news, a recent Newsweek poll found that a majority of Republicans believe that Obama “probably” wants to impose Sharia throughout the world. You know, if he gets around to it.

  1. It didn’t help Obama to say what he did in a whitehouse.gov statement last month, “Ramadan is a reminder that Islam has always been part of America.” The right wing bloggers jumped on that immediately.

  2. But do they have any concept of what Sharia law actually is? Probably not. Like “death panels”, “Sharia” is just a buzzword that requires no other definition than “a term that conveys our hatred of Obama”. If only the right could be more like the progressive left, and hate Obama for reasons related to actual job performance.

  3. Regarding the Newsweek poll: Leave us not forget that polling these days reaches a population significantly skewed toward the older folks, because polling is done over land lines. Not many younguns these days have those.

And also, I’m going to choose to be optimistic about this latest batshit crazy poll result (rather than take my blanket into the closet with me and close the door, quivering and whimpering). These folks who were called on their landlines identified themselves as Republicans, and answered the questions they were asked. Honestly.

Here comes the optimism: The Republican Party Is Doomed.

  4. These people absorb stories and ideas like this because they are terrified, not of Sharia but of the collapse of their world, their jobs, their homes, and their belief in the future. The people like Beck and Palin who are selling this garbage TALK TO THEM. Obama’s not talking to them. The Democrats have nothing to say except “haw, haw, lookit the dum hillbillies”.

  5. I’d be willing to bet that if Orrin Hatch were actually up for re-election this year, he’d never have said anything like this.
