Average White Band @ Jazz Alley
Forty-two years after their formation, the Average White Band remain the finest funk-and-R&B band ever to hail from Dundee, Scotland. After dazzling the world with their honky-funk chops on the 1974 hit โPick Up the Pieces,โ AWB kept on plying their singular trade, swapping out members as the decades passed (with Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre the only original members still in the lineup) and becoming the type of music-biz lifers whose Wikipedia entry contains sentences like this: โGorrie also overdosed, but Cher kept him conscious until medical help arrived.โ Now itโs the 21st century, and AWB are still at it, but even if theyโd stopped, theyโd still be part of the culture, thanks to the prolific sampling of their work by the Beastie Boys, TLC, Too $hort, Ice Cube, Eric B. & Rakim, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest. Tonight the Average White Band begin the first of four nights at Jazz Alley. DAVID SCHMADER

Moraine, Autumn Electric and the Glacial Drift @ Columbia City Theater
Led by masterly guitarist Dennis Rea, Seattleโs Moraine work in the heady realm where prog rock, Rock in Opposition, and jazz fusion intersect. Itโs kind of lonely out there, but Moraine have been soldiering on for eight years, creating a three-album catalog of fiery and finessed instrumental music that should appeal to fans of Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, and Henry Cow. Moraineโs newest album, 2014โs Groundswell, was engineered by studio wizard Steve Fisk, and itโs the quintetโs best-sounding disc to date. Kevin Millardโs bass and Tom Zgoncโs drums really punch while Rea, violinist Alicia DeJoie, and woodwind specialist James DeJoie inscribe ornate calligraphy over the solid bottom end. This is dynamic, imaginative music full of smart, surprising moves and rich, intriguing melodies. DAVE SEGAL
