I cried when I woke up today, not about our new president Barack Obama (SCREAM!!!) but about our new BEAUTIFUL AND STYLISH FIRST LADY!!! Would it be antifeminist to say IN YOUR FACE, STUPID ALASKA BARBIE BITCH?!

LOVED the dress.

  1. Oh, I did not like that dress. But I love her. And by the time they leave the White House in eight years, I know who the most eligible bachelorette in the universe is going to be: Malia. These are seriously fabulous-looking people.

  2. Bethany, I’m afraid I have to disagree — the dress was really not pretty or flattering…it made her look like the Attack of the Killer Hips.

But bottom line is she is most certainly a BEAUTIFUL and stylish woman…

  3. Yeah, realizing she was going to be our First Lady is what really pushed me over the edge of choking up last night. Such an incredible family!

  4. The dress was fantastic from the waist up, but (maybe because she paired it with a cardigan) did things to her hips that should never, ever be done.

  5. I’m with y’all…that dress was U-G-L-Y. LOVE our new first lady, but I even commented to my husband that she could have at least dressed up for the event. MONOCHROMATIC…works for everyone..
Maybe the Stranger could call What Not To Wear as a Conratulatory Gift for Mrs. Obama…

  6. My first thought when Michelle came out was how proud she looked, and I choked up a bit. My second thought was about why they hell Oprah didn’t talk her out of that terrible terrible dress.

  7. I liked the dress, I always think she looks hot, and OMG! I know! She’s an amazing woman. I’m excited for 4 (8? 16?) years of her.

  8. Dress? She’s a brilliant woman in her own right. I can’t wait to see her go to work on her projects and helping her husband be successful. Dress?

  9. I really liked it. What I like more than the dress itself was I think what went behind the choice (and I know this is a bit of a stretch): she is going to be the kind of new, bold first lady that isn’t afraid to not wear an oscar de la renta suit like everyone else in washington. Instead, she chose one of the most striking dresses from Narcisco Rodriguez’ (one of the best young american designers) spring ’09 collection. It’s new and it’s different. Great stuff.

  10. i noticed the dress, and that she didn’t look like a carbon copy of every politician’s wife, and something did a dance of joy inside me. plus, i thought the dress was lovely. let’s watch that video of palin cry one more time…

  11. It’d make more sense to make the ‘in your face’ remark about Cindy McCain, since VP!=First Lady, but I can understand the sentiment.

I wasn’t a fan of the dress; I know diddly about fashion but it looked like she had a black windbreaker tied around her waist or something.

  12. I agree with the article you linked: the fact that she’s wearing this kind of dress – whatever you think of it – is as significant of a symbol of change as anything else in this election. I’ve seen it – powerful Washington women wear plain, bright pant or skirt suits, paired with scarves, pearls, or edgy shoes in an attempt to not look like every other woman. Michelle really doesn’t dress like them, which is fantastic. It makes me happy, and it is important.

  13. Actually, Rhett, I think people are SIMULTANEOUSLY analyzing and parsing a whole mess of things. It’s not impossible to also have a little chat about fashion. It’s called multitasking, so get off the high horse!

I think it’s awesome that Michelle takes risks and is way stylish, but I didn’t like that particular choice. It looked like she had blood spattered all over her, which made me think of Jackie O in Dallas. Not the best theme for the night.

  14. oh fuck off at 19. There’s time in a day to discuss both the important and the trivial. I’ll bet you’re really fun to hang out with, Miss Serious Sally!

  15. I didn’t like the dress– the waist thing was wierding me out hardcore. However, I’m sure that today every major designer out there is beside themselves trying to design for the inaguration in January. That’s what I’m looking forward to.

  16. The dress, modeled on the runway: http://www.style.com/slideshows/fashionshows/S2009RTW/NRODRIGU/RUNWAY/00390m.jpg

I didn’t like the dress at first either, although I think it was a poor pairing of dress and occasion, not a problem with the dress itself. With the cardigan and night-time background, it DID look like she had something unflatteringly tied around her waist, but the dress itself, in its original concept, is really stunning.

It didn’t help that Michelle wore a more conservative cut than the modeled dress–notice that Michelle’s is longer and made of heavier material, which is appropriate, but gives it a certain weird dowdiness.

  17. The dress looks good in closeup, where you can see the detail. From a mile away, which is where America saw her, it looked like she’d spilt a can of paint on herself.
Rhett, don’t think I don’t appreciate her. I think she kicks ass. It’s just a dress.

  18. You’d think an amazing, beautiful, talented woman with two gorgeous children and a husband who just became president of the united states would have a lot to stand tall over. Seriously, Michelle needs to STOP SLOUCHING, her posture kills me, and it makes everything she wears look less than lovely. The dress isn’t amazing but it would be a hell of a lot better if she just threw her shoulders back

  19. the dress was a miss. better luck next time, michelle. but i love the accessory daughters–gorgeous. oldest takes after dad, youngest takes after mom.

  20. Yes, I think it’s antifeminist to say “stupid Alaska bitch.” You wouldn’t like if they called Michelle a “stupid Chicago bitch,” so why is it okay to say it about Sarah? Well, in my book it isn’t. I’m still old-school and don’t like words like “bitch” anyway. I’d just say she’s a mean, nasty person. For me, calling someone “mean” is one of the worst things you can say about them. But then I’m “old school,” as you’d say.

  21. All six of us at our election party last night thought she looked pregnant — which would actually be AWESOME. Dries van Nooten doing maternity wear would be the BEST! This dress aside, she has immaculate fashion sense and will routinely make everyone else feel like they need a Sarah Palin-style celebrity stylist on call!

  22. I thought that the Obama family looked wonderful and precious up there. I thought Michelles dress was very different, I think that’s what she wanted. To be different. Good for her.
My worry is now for their little family, with the white groups who hate blacks…I will pray for the Obamas everyday for their safety from those kooks. Even though I did not vote for him, I’ll pray for their safety!

  24. BAD DRESS! So unlike Michelle Obama. She likes shifts — fine — but then concentrate on perfect fitting and on beautiful fabrics. If you look at that Metropolitan Museum catalog of the exhibit of Jackie Kennedy’s clothes you will see that they are all shifts and all cut exactly alike; some with sleeves, some sleeveless, some with jackets — ALL beautifully fitted and in elegant materials. Michelle needs to get herself one really good tailor/dressmaker, in or around D.C., and stick with that person. Last night’s dress was a disaster!

  25. michelle obama looks like a gorilla. she will be the ugliest first lady this nation has seen. she looks like a drag queen, mind you an ugly drag queen.

  26. I do hope that some of the top designers get to Michelle Obama asap and dress her.

Maybe she can get a call from the TV show “What Not To Wear.”

  27. Michelle’s dress was very unattractive therefore befitting of the personality she has portrayed to date. she comes across as a very angry prejudiced blck woman with little respect or love for our great country. You may be able to find people who can teach her to dress nicer..stand up straight…not come across for bitchy…but can you take the hate for our country and white americans out of her heart? I doubt it!

  28. Michelle, you are the most important person in YOUR world. Can the rest of the world let you just be? And who made the rest of you the fashion police? Burger off!!!!

  29. it is good she is the most important person besides her children in her world…thats how it should be…so get out of everyone elses business…if she werent such a hypocrit it would be different…but she is horrible racest against whites and has no problem showing it. Remember there isnt such a thing as a white caucus. The country cant and wont continue to pay the price for slavery which was horrible and in tollerable. Therefor people like michelle and barack hussein need to get over it and be americans, not just black americans

  30. I wish people could stop lieing. this black broad will never pass for the of first lady. She is an ugly ,nappy hair, racist bitch, that walks like a monkey.

  31. I cant believe u can honestly say that Michelle is attractive …. lol
Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, ….. those are attractive and classy women that Michelle cant even compete with.

  32. Obama and Michelle can live at the White House for their term, 4 or 8 yrs. After, that, people will be so sick of the blacks whining that it will be a whole different playing field. How can people even think of talking about Michelle’s warbrobe. Her clothes look like she made them.

She looks so bitter and hateful; I can see why the motto “angry black woman” got started

  33. “stupid barbie bitch” ???? yeah, I can see that OBama is uniting this nation regarding diversity. And they have such a classy way of showing it. Who cares about Michels clothes……….. look at her….
    clothes cant fix that

  34. Michelle Obama is hideous. Even fans of Barack have to rip out the Koolaid IV and admit his wife looks like the 4th guy on the evolution chart. She’s also gained about 50 pounds since the start of the campaign. Who will be dressing her for the inaugural ball? Omar the tent maker?
