Nattily dressed business woman sitting next to me: “You fucking tell them they’re not to fucking change any of those fucking purchase agreements until they hear from me, you got it?” Turning to me: “Forgive my language.”

  1. Are you complaining, Dan? You shouldn’t. You yourself, in your writing, have contributed to this vulgarization of the English language.

  2. @ 3. My first thought as well. I hate being on the grammar police but I’ve been forced to read through tens of thousands of pages of documents with some of the most atrocious grammar for the last 8 weeks and I don’t want to see it on slog. *sigh*

  3. Hey, don’t complain. Bet your bottom dollar that the flight attendants will be giving her (and therefore you) good service …especially if you act like you’re her husband.

  4. And who the hell flies American Airlines? Shit, I haven’t flown on one of their planes in 15 years. (They don’t “do” Denver.)

  5. @23 Very nice! (I love that word…)

5280, the last time I flew on AA, I swear it was like what I’ve read about Aeroflot…I don’t think the plane had had an upgrade since 1972. There were definitely no USB ports in the seat backs.

  6. @25 I’ve flown on Aeroflot. The service on Aeroflot (on a domestic flight to/from Moscow) is much better than the service you get on most US domestic flights.

  7. @5: Natty is a word that always sounds to me like it should mean the its inverse. When I hear the phrase “natty sweater”, my mind first conjures a picture of a sweater with a snag in it, and then I have to forcibly move to a picture of a fashionable and neat sweater.

  8. Actually, there’s no evidence for “fuck” being Anglo-Saxon (though most people think it’s Germanic). Shit, turd, and arse are found in the Old English corpus.

Oh, and cunt is from the Latin “cunctus,” meaning crack.

I wrote about this in grad school. Probably the best part of the experience.

  9. That’s funny… I was just complaining about my new pet peeve, which is older men (specifically, the older male executives at my clients), who pointedly do not swear because I am present, or who look at me and apologize for swearing after doing so. This has been happening a lot lately, for some reason. My response today to “Pardon my French”: “That’s okay, I actually speak French fluently.”

  10. Ya know, when I was a kid you could be arrested for lacking the bare intelligence needed for knowing what was and wasn’t appropriate public speech.

Too bad this woman wasn’t born 2 decades sooner. She could share her foul mouth with the hookers in a holding cell. She and they have much in common as far as class goes.

  11. @39: Yes, it really is unfortunate that the days are past when women knew how to behave appropriately.

What’s even more shocking is that this “lady”, and I use the term very loosely (though not as “loose” as someone with her guttermouth probably is – har har!), was permitted to travel on her own. She even seems to have a job of some sort.

She clearly needs a husband who knows how to keep her in her place.

  12. Actually, all that is your inference entirely unsupported by anything I wrote.

Though you’re right that an inability to speak or write without recourse to profanity is telling about morality and general classiness. Just look at Savage if you don’t believe me. The man has no class, no morals, no ethics and he can’t string together a sentence on any subject without using ‘fuck’ at least once.
