To the extent that Hispanics bring and retain their Catholic cultural values with them they also dilute the values that made and make America exceptional.
Compare and contrast Britain, Germany, Canada and Australia to Spain, Italy, Greece, Latin America and the Philippines; for example.
Another factor, of course, is that White Americans also adhere less and less to the ethical ideals of their forefathers.

Hey Pat Buchanan, how long has your family been in this country? In the America of 2041, my brown family will have been in this country for something like 120 years. Yeah, when they first immigrated, they were broke as shit and didn’t speak English and had to work menial jobs. Then, guess what happened? Assimilation and education, just like with every immigrant group in America. So now my family has a bunch of bougie brown professionals living in the suburbs, now matter that abuela used to work in the fields and her abuelo never really learned English. Hell, we’re American enough that in another generation, there’s a good chance that we will spawn off some over-privileged Republican asshole who will shit all over the current group of immigrants. And in 2041, the kids and grandkids of all those recent brown immigrants that have Pat Buchanan shitting himself will be assimilating into America in exactly the same way the Irish and Italians and Germans did before them.
I lean heavily to the left on most social issues, and I am no racist, but the guy has got a very good point. His only mistake, and it is a very big one, is that he is calling it a “white issue”. There are pleanty of African Americans that have felt the financial pinch from our lack of immigration oversight as well.
I don’t know that it’s entirely unfair to say that the changing demographics of the country have shaped prevailing cultural norms and to lament some of those changes. For example, some authors (and I wish I could remember/cite the book I have in mind) have suggested that the influence of African-American cultural norms have led to more Caucasians being open to parenthood without marriage. I believe that while single parenthood can be perfectly OK, it is generally advantageous for the mother and the child if there is a second parent involved in providing and caring for the family.
At the same time, you can’t paint it as white=good and everything else=bad. There are more and less successful cultural norms in every culture. It would be far more useful (though less provocative) to define what prevailing cultural norms would be valuable for the country and then figure out how to achieve them together, rather than xenophobically blaming one culture and ignoring the flaws in the supposed shining white past.
@18 – since you don’t register, I can only assume you’re the same person who, in every instance where race is a topic of discussion, trots out stats to argue that blacks are intrinsically more likely to commit crime. That’s not an inconvenient truth, and it’s not debate/dialogue. It’s someone with an agenda who’s not listening to anyone else and is just looking to provoke. And that’s trolling. @22 – single black mothers may be demonized, but that doesn’t mean that they (or more to the point – their expectations and those of their partners around the importance or unimportance of marriage) haven’t shaped cultural norms. Regardless of cause, marriage is definitely less important these days in white culture than it once was. It’s no longer a foregone conclusion that an unplanned pregnancy requires the man to “do the honorable thing.”

I still don’t see how black culture is responsible for that. Greater freedom for women (the right to preventive birth control and abortion, the right to no fault divorce, and increased participation in the workforce) is responsible for a woman no longer feeling like she has to marry some asshole (or stay married to him indefinitely) just because she got pregnant. White people increasingly turning away from religion is also a factor.
Black culture has long included the entire extended family in raising a child (probably one reason why marriage hasn’t been a big deal to black parents for a long time). Why hasn’t that cultural trend been adopted by white people?

@32 – Please don’t think I’m saying black culture is definitely to blame for any specific trend. I’m using it strictly as an example of something where some peope have argued that cultural norms in one community influenced cultural norms in another. Concern about appearing racist can inhibit those sorts of debates, and I don’t think that’s healthy. I also don’t think blaming everything bad on non-whites is healthy.
Could we please just fast-forward a couple of decades to the point when everyone has reached a consensus that Mexicans and other Hispanic Americans are white? Just as we have previously excluded, then included, the Irish, Italians, Jews, etc. It will still suck for African Americans (it will likely always suck to some degree for African Americans in a country that was built on–and nearly torn apart by–slavery), but at least the rest of us won’t have to listen to the paranoid whining and ranting of Buchanan and other Tea Party morons.
