So, things are getting even crazier. The assistant coach whose testimony is central to the exposure of this baby-raper and the cover-up of his crimes won’t be going to the game this week in Nebraska because he’s been subjected to threats. (This link is to a story that covers the whole shebang pretty comprehensively, for those of you joining this story late.)
My heart bleeds for the poor guy who didn’t go to the cops when he saw a grown man allegedly raping a ten-year-old boy, and thereby enabled the sexual abuse of more children. Allegedly.
A question to answer in comments: What’s the over-under on bar fights that will be started more or less along these lines: Guy walks into a bar wearing Penn State gear. Someone makes a “Baby-Raper University” comment, melee ensues. Let’s do some math: According to Wikipedia,

OK, so with over half a million alums (although none are on countries that are not around the globe, so that cuts down on extraterrestrial brawls), I’d say that a minimum of 10,000 bar fights will occur along the lines of the scenario above. Hell, there might be that many in Lincoln this weekend alone (UPDATE: turns out the game is in Happy Rapey Valley, not Nebraska. Still, there might be some PSU alums planning to watch the game in some Lincoln sports bars . . . ).
Students and alumni of Notre Dame, America’s first and foremost Roman Catholic university, are of course barred from making such comments, given the performance of the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, which makes the administration of Penn State look like the Justice League in comparison to their generations-long cover-ups.
Nebraska should add some scantily clad 10 year old boys to the half time show and perform Justin Bieber songs.
You know, I could almost maybe understand the guy who called his dad instead of the cops – if the guy in question were an 18 year old Freshman or something. But here’s what I will never understand:why didn’t the dad call the cops?
If your child – whatever his age – called and told you about some horrible crime he witnessed, and was presumably in shock or something, wouldn’t you step in?

There’s a joke in Pennsylvania politics that there’s Pittsburgh on one end and Philadelphia on the other and Alabama in the middle. Penn State is in that proverbial “Alabama”.

Based on the news of the reaction of Penn State students last night, I imagine that the threats towards whats his name is because “that guy started it.” And had he kept his mouth shut, Penn Staters—who clearly have their priorities—could go on with their weird ass worship of Joe paterno.
Clearly the athletic department and the university was most interested in making the story go away.
Penn State deserves what ever shitty thing happens to it.

The Kid was a graduate assistant so Sandusky was basically his boss & held the power to end his chances of coaching, That does not excuse him for what he didn’t do but how many of you have ever faced that sort of situation? Its easy in the comfort of your living room to ‘know’ you would have done the right thing at 23. I did, though it was fraud not rape. I was not as brave as I should have been, I quit & then reported anonymously which hindered the investigation.
He should be fired for not intervening, everyone that knew or should have known in the athletic department and in the school admin should be fired as well.
And if someone could explain why the lie “sports builds character” is still repeated as truth I’d like to hear it.
Simple answer, people take “higher” education far too serious these days.

@9 Ummm, no. Alabama deserves the slap. Their newest xenophobic, protectionist, anti-immigrant law has caused their migrant farmworkers to flee and their own agricultural sector to suffer massive losses while their crops rot in the fields. Mean and stupid. Mississippi, much as I feel contemptuous towards them most of the time, deserves accolades for emphatically voting down that stupid “personhood” law which, by the way, is the product of a Colorado group who couldn’t pass it in Colorado, either.
What I’m not clear on is the nature of the threats: is McQuery being threatened because he didn’t call the police/blow the whistle/put a stop to it, or because he is seen as having played a hand in Paterno’s downfall?

fwiw, the use of “graduate assistant” to describe McQueary’s job in 2002 somehow doesn’t convey that he 28 years old and a former Penn State quarterback.
Fuck Mike McQueary. At 28, I would’ve known better than to witness child rape and not go to the cops. I hope criminal charges are brought against him. Obstruction of justice, perhaps. Paterno too.

I don’t know if I blame McQueary for reporting the rape to his superiors instead of going to the cops immediately. All of you deriding him have obviously never actually witnessed a crime or been the victim of one in front of a witness. Virtually no one will do anything in the face of a crime being committed right in front of their eyes; it’s human nature.
I do fault him, however, for not going to the cops after PSU was obviously ignoring/covering up Sandusky’s crimes.
@ 13 – Sandusky no longer worked for Penn State at the time of the alleged rape allegedly witnessed by McQueary.
Also, Penn State alumni have raised almost $200,000 (with a goal of $557,000) for RAINN in the last four or five days. Yes, the rioters are idiotic, but so is the broad brush bullshit.
