From our June article “Seven Things We Learned While Riding Light Rail for the First Time,” item number six is called the first weekend of light rail is going to suck:
On opening weekend, July 18 and 19, the train will be free, though it will only be running from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. (Sound Transit is expecting 100,000 riders on opening day. It’ll have double the number of trains out than it normally will.) Plus, once you get to the end, you’ll have to wait in line (again) to take the train back home or get on a damn bus
Other than that, light rail is really fucking cool.

Yeah, it’s gonna be a circus. I’m planning on waiting a week or so to take my first ride.
No one’s gonna ride it this weekend; it’s gonna be too crowded.

Bike down to Westlake, and then ride to Rainier Beach with your bike on the train, get off and it’s a nice Saturday ride back along Lake Washington!

From the NPR story this morning, I expect dozens of train related fatalities in the Rainier Valley this weekend.
Will has figured out that light rail doesn’t go to Capitol Hill, finally, but now he thinks the SLUT goes there.
When San Jose’s light rail first opened, twenty years ago, the line ended in the middle of a field. I think there’s some crappy condo buildings out there now, but still, it was funny.
I’m going to /try/ to ride it to work on Saturday and Sundy, but if there’s a line at the Pioneer Square station, I’ll just walk a block down and catch a bus on 2nd.
