I don’t think tax exempt organizations are permitted to make ads explicitly calling on people for or against a candidate. I think it’s a “fan ad”.
@14: First off, it’s the PP Action Fund. PP has two distinct wings: advocacy like this, and healthcare, to keep them clear of campaign finance laws and assure that the healthcare mission isn’t compromised. Second, if you listen carefully, the ad doesn’t once urge a vote for or against anyone, it only explains their voting records. None of the “magic words” of Buckley v. Valeo are used.
I get really angry when the sex ed hit piece on Obama is played and because I’d like to think that our side can aspire to better I feel compelled to say that this issue is not a fair argument. Palin was mayor of Wausilla, but it was the hospital that was charging not the city and that had been happening before she was elected mayor. And while there’s evidence that she knew about it, it’s unclear what exactly she could have done as mayor to change the policy.
It’s a totally fair hit on McCain in terms of his Senate vote, but the issue isn’t quite as clear for Palin.
