  1. That’s all very well and good, but WHAT’S A ZEUGMA?

Your answer had better not contain any guff about “using a single verb to act on multiple objects”.

  2. I forgot a lot of my undergrad learning, so forgive me: is “Zeugma” pronounced with the g out loud, like the way my sister says Ermenegildo Zegna, or silently, like when she tells me I sound phlegmy on the phone?

  3. You’re lucky, Gus — my sister doesn’t say Ermenegildo Zegna at all.

I would sound the g. Otherwise, who’s-a zeugmaing who, and that’s not allowed.

Yay! “who’s a zeugmaing who?” did you play that one could only point with their elbow? there were some other funny terms. i think Schwartz and Pfiligliano, others?

  5. @2

I think the “g” in “Ermenegildo” is a [ʤ] sound and the “gn” in “Zegna” is a [ɲ] sound (or [ɲɲ], if you say the whole word). Please encourage your sister to clean up her act.

  6. @7, I was kind of dissing my sister on that, you know? But super thanks. So having just met I’m going out on a limb to predict you’re the sort who’ll have to mention what school you went to. I’d guess U. of Chicago, but recently enough you don’t have a sense of humor about it yet. Close?

Sometimes I wish I had gifts beyond “getting off on the wrong foot”.

  7. I can only assume that ZEUGMA is some sort of weird Stranger acronym, like SECB or something. But in their own Stranger way, they’re not tellin’.

  8. @8

Oh dear Gus, I was only teasing. And Chicago is a FAR better guess than the truth (you can always email me if you want to be disappointed).
