From my upcoming, and very short, report on the new round of job cuts at the Seattle Times:

In the Times newsroom, which is now set to lose a total of about 65 staffers this year, the mood is reportedly grim.

“It’s a dismal goddamn place,” said one longtime employee. “The whole newsroom is just sort of seething with despair. It’s vibrating out the walls like some kind of horrible acid trip, with no come-down in sight.”

Eli Sanders was The Stranger's associate editor. His book, "While the City Slept," was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He once did this and once won...

  1. Keep supporting Democrats.

Look how well it worked for you!

Ask Bill Ayers to use some of his trust fund money from his dad, the former CEO of Con Ed, to help you writers stay in business.

    It’s all one now.

  2. I didn’t realize the ghost of Hunter S. Thompson was working in the Times newsroom.

“Bastards everywhere! What den of atavistic swine could have done a thing like this?”

  3. looks like you managed to find a longtime employee with a severe personality disorder. morale is low here, naturally, but “seething with despair”? lol

somehow I am not surprised that you love this quote eli – weren’t you, um, “let go” from the Times a few years back?

  4. bailo, who’s president NOW? bush cannot escape this legacy. he chose the tax cuts, he chose the war, he chose the lax oversight. own it.

  5. Thank you, maxsoloman #8. I keep hearing about how this is “Obamas economy” and “look at the mess he’s caused already” and it makes me want to puke.

    John Bailo: Are you retarded?

  6. Oh I’ll bet I know who said that – he’s had about four chances to take the money and run. A regular bleedin’ Jesus on the cross who likes to be miserable.

  7. @14, but what’s even BETTER is that, because Eli wasn’t hired, he’s had the chance to write for the NYT and other national rags and has a high-profile job at a beloved weekly that allows him to travel and cover more interesting stories than he ever would have at the Times.

And he’s not getting laid off soon (knock wood) like most of you bitter clowns.

    Carry on.

It sucks that the Times is laying off people. It sucks when people loose their jobs. Try to keep that in mind when you’re throwing up your cowardly posts.

  9. @14: Nope. That’s marginally closer than the others, but still very far off the mark. But I don’t think your intent is to get my job history right. Anyone who’s interested can look at my web site, which is linked below. If that doesn’t answer your burning questions about my roughly three years at The Seattle Times, give me call. I’m not that hard to find.

    @15 & 16: Thank you kindly.
