Here’s the full text of Job’s resignation letter to the Apple board:
August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
This was all expected, but it’s sad that he’s being forced by illness to step aside at Apple’s peak, and while he’s still young. It will be fascinating to see how Apple does in the next couple years (prediction: very well), and annoying as hell to read the incessant “would Steve have let this happen?” punditry that follows every perceived misstep.
Apple’s stock is down a little over 5% in after-hours trading, which isn’t all that bad, considering. Buy.

Which means the biggest company on earth now has a gay CEO. Can’t believe that didn’t get a mention on god damn Slog of all places.
Wow, sorry to hear that it’s for health reasons. Hope he pulls through.
A CEO resigns and gets two breathless posts on Slog?
Oh. It’s Apple.
@4, Well maybe we’ll be lucky and Steve Ballmer will resign too, and we can generate a few Slog posts out of that, just to even things up.
@1 thank you! As a gay I take some credit, of course.
I agree.
Buy.
Will, are you still claiming that there will be a 3D iPad out by this Christmas?
Watch the stock tomorrow. You buy, you will be sorry.
Seattle is fueled by Microsoft money which allows for its cultural imports and cultural/social relevance in the world. I would think people would want to support the company that puts this city on anyones map. In fact this publication owes a ton to the culture that MSFT brought into town.
Yes it is to blame for all of the condos and a lot of ugly architecture but the industry it brought is also the source of a lot of art funding. Do you think your favorite NYC band would ever have come all the way to Seattle if it wasn’t a culturally relevant location?
Ultimately a local publication promoting Microsofts competition will only hurt our local economy as well as the imports we cherish so much.
Time to bring back John Sculley, I say.
Microsoft won’t have Steve Jobs to kick around anymore. Hmm. That’s probably a bit dated.
You might want to pay more attention to the world economy. Think about waiting for AAPL to dip below 300 before buying.
@11, no! Give the nelly first mate his turn at the helm.
I wish he’d written simply, “iQuit”.
I just want Mr. Cook to know that I’m single, versatile and willing to relocate to the Bay Area.
@16, you’re too late, I’ve just begun stalking him and that ectomorphic needle-nosed silver fox will be mine. Imagine – a life where you never have to worry about your Apple Care expiring.
sell
@8 Thank you! I’m glad someone else remembers his outlandish claims and calls him on his bullshit.
And Hecht- even with you Apple fanboyism, you have tipped your hand as to what you really believe will happen… after all, if Steve Jobs is leaving “at Apple’s peak”, where is there for the company to go but down?
