  1. @1: Nah, even in an airplane that’s pretty slow. Consider how quickly express elevators move. If they could go up as high as 1,000 feet, the speed would be a little faster.

Unless, of course, you’re afraid of elevators too, in which case, don’t consider that.

  2. Whoa, check out the role that Twitter can play in breaking news like this:

Janis Krums from Sarasota, Florida posts the first photo of U.S. Airways flight 1549 on Twitter from his iPhone. Thirty-four minutes after Janis posted his photo, MSNBC interviewed him live on TV as a witness.

Ha. Not just for 13-year-old girls.

  3. Terrorist geese, who snuck across the border from Canada, caused this. Canada is a failed state (it doesn’t even have a functioning Parliament), so W will launch a “shock ‘n’ awe” bombing campaign tonight through Monday night.

  4. Jargon is correct, the pilot did “ditch” – the plane is intact. Pretty amazing that it was done with both engines having been blown out.

New York is within the Canadian Geese’s Atlantic Flyway. Though feeding geese typically fly at 100 to 1000 feet on feeding flights, pilots have seen them at up to 9000 feet.

  5. @15, it’s Canada Geese, not Canadian (their nationality is unknown and irrelevant to the case). Yes, I know it’s pedantic, but this frequent mistake drives me nuts.

  6. GW didn’t even mention this in his farewell address hours after it happened, I bet this pilot will be a guest at Obama’s State Of The Union.

  7. @19, the pictures show lots of folks standing on the wing after the crash. either they’re really tough, or this situation varied from the MB scenario in some key way.
