Every time one of these conservative douchebags starts talking about how Bush’s administration kept us from getting attacked again after 9/11, all I can think about is that episode of the Simpsons where Lisa sells Homer a rock that “prevents” tiger attacks. Spurious. Specious. (Thanks, c.)

  1. And of course, what they conveniently ignore is the fact that, despite repeated warnings, and despite blithely ignoring said warnings – 9/11 happened ON SHRUB’S WATCH!

He and his cronies didn’t “prevent ANOTHER 9/11” so much as they ALLOWED 9/11 to happen in the first place.

  2. Homer: Well, there’s not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol is sure doing its job.
    Lisa: That’s specious reasoning, Dad.
    Homer: Thank you, sweetie.
Lisa: Dad, what if I were to tell you that this rock keeps away tigers.
Homer: Uh-huh, and how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn’t work. It’s just a stupid rock.
    Homer: I see.
Lisa: But you don’t see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I’d like to buy your rock.

  3. The conservatives cling to it because they have nothing else that they can even speciously use to their advantage.
Bush truly was an exemplar of failure.

  4. Really? That’s what comes to mind?

For me, I think about the anthrax scare (which came after 9/11) and all those bogus terrorist plots that were supposedly stopped just in time. Remember the pizza delivery guys that were going to somehow destroy fort dix with a few guns and flee the country. Couple of dudes against an army base, riiiiiight. Or what about those guys in england that were planning a massive attack but had no training, money, passports, weapons, tickets or connection to a major terrorist group. Or that “terrorist” with ricin that nobody knew about until his dog alerted hotel workers after he was in a coma for days. Or maybe that train attack in madrid that we failed to prevent. I guess it’s not our problem if it happens to somebody else.

The fact that there hasn’t been another (bigger) attack (on american soil) since 9/11 (because that failure doesn’t count) says nothing about Bush’s success (or lack thereof) and everything about blowhard ideologues and their selective memory.

It makes my dick hard to think about the day when these pendejos can’t even turn a penny selling oranges on the freeway they’ve been so throughly discredited.

  5. A rock = Iraq.

    I ran = Iran.

Both useless wars the US would be well advised to stay far far far far far away from.

    Bush = EPIC FAIL.

  6. Plus I hate the way “not attacked” means “by foreign terroists on American soil” — excluding the anthrax letters, the DC sniper, embassy bombings and a host of others. I don’t think the Bush supporters would even count Timmy McVay as “an attack” the way they are chosing to filter it.

  7. Actually, the issue is this, “Why was it that out of nearly a dozen presidents since 1941, only Bush II had an attack by a foreign invader occur on his watch?” The same U.S. defense apparatus (be they CIA, FBI, Armed Forces), managed to protect the US homeland from foreign attacks since then.

It didn’t matter who was commander-in-chief, the job was being done. There were threats and attempts to attack America, but they were stopped. It was so consistent, that it was expected our government could handle this job (even against major threats like the USSR and Iran).

For whatever reason, when Bush entered office, this “sure thing” failed in less than a year. Is that simply the law of averages or was there something fundamentally wrong about the Bush Administration’s oversight and handling of the situation. In the short term, he received a free pass. What about the long term?

I don’t know the answer yet, but if there is no attack during the Obama administration and/or the following administrations, then history will not be kind to Bush. It will look less like the law of averages and more like incompetence (especially factoring in all his other failures like the economy).

  8. @12: the first WTC attack was on clinton’s watch – not sure if it was “foreign” – but i don’t think the culprits were citizens.

  9. @14: Right, absolutely, but Clinton’s legacy is now (depending on who you ask) either a consistently strong economy and a relatively calm international situation, or penis-gate. Not “they only tried to blow up the WTC once while he was pres.”

Regardless of what I think of Matthews, his question is right-on: if Bush gets to take credit for the lack of major explosions on U.S. soil *after* 9/11, why doesn’t he also get credit for the major explosion *on* 9/11? It’s not like I blame Bush himself for allowing that attack to happen, I just don’t think he gets credit for keeping the country safe.

  10. @15 – the difference is President Clinton found the evil-doers with good old fashioned detective work and without torture or unnecessary paranoia, or removal of civil liberties and constitutional rights.

Whereas Comrade Bush used it as an excuse to start a war we didn’t need, bankrupt the nation, and forced us to live in fear under his Regime.

  11. Homer: We’re here, we’re queer, we don’t want anymore bears.
Crowd: We’re here, we’re queer, we don’t want anymore bears.
Lenny: Hey, that’s a pretty catchy chant. Where did you hear it?
Homer: Oh, I heard it at the mustache parade they have every year.

  12. Imagine you were going out of town for 8 months and you lent me your car while you were gone.

If I was an idiot and I parked it in bad neighborhoods or forgot lock it up most of the time, and then one month after you left someone broke into your car and ripped out the stereo, how hard would you kick my ass when I picked you up from the airport at the end of your trip and to the question “What the hell happened to my stereo?!?” I responded to you…

“You should be thankful! I kept you car save and secure for the the last seven months!!!”

  13. And I can’t help but think of those people that died from the anthrax attacks.

Or is terrorism only terrorism if an arab does it?
