The Internet is a precious natural resource and the Stranger is committed to conserving the Internet for future generations to use and enjoy. We can best honor that commitment by refraining from filling up the Internet with idle speculation. Because if we fill up the Internet with idle speculation then where will future generations get their porn?

  1. While you pause to consider your mission statement again, take a moment to seriously consider why you continue to allow commenting on your Slog posts, and whether it adds any value whatsoever (other than giving otherwise clinically lonely and desperate souls the illusion of being part of a “community”)…

  2. @5: it used to be that comments were interesting. Now it’s at least 50-60% anonymous jackass trolls spouting racist remarks, right-wing talking points, or just general bitching…

  3. @8: No, the comments were never interesting, just as they are not interesting anywhere else on the entire internet, from Newsweek stories to Huffington posts to Youtube videos

  4. Silly @5, I’ll bet you think TV is just about the programs, don’t you?

If you eliminate comments, people would only need to read posts ONCE, rather than hitting “refresh” eight gazillion times to see the latest inane comments, thereby driving hit counts through the roof, which in turn helps justify the rates The Stranger charges its online advertisers.

    *Sigh!* So young. So naive.

  5. Why is the Stranger so incapable of taking what it dishes out? Had the PI done something like this we’d being reading one raving screed after another. I don’t really give a shit if some blog on the internet makes wild speculation but don’t be such a goddamn baby about it when your speculation doesn’t pan out. You fucked up. Now move on.

  6. it’s not about filling up the internet, it’s about maintaining some semblance of credibility.

sure, it was fun (which is maybe the point of Slog), but when others could get a flat-out denial from the Obama team, it was a bit goofy to keep fueling the rumors.

  7. trying to go to sleep last night with the thought of Brad Owens as governor kept me and mine restless with nightmares, enough to consider that truly we need a better Lt Gov and that the voters of WA need to have a decent choice to vote for; so, Dan/Stranger/sloggers, I implore you to use this opportunity to find and encourage a worthy candidate to be a heartbeat away from governor of Washington!!

  8. I’m only comment a lot because someone told me there’s a brand new set of steak knives for the person who submits the most comments.

  9. I’ve noticed the quality of my comments has continued to improve apace. Perhaps this makes others only appear to be in decline? I think you are too hard on yourselves.

  10. I have found that the secret to Internet Happiness is to resolutely ignore all sarcasm. Consequently, I heartily applaud this new resolution.

  11. There’s room for idle speculation AND porn on the internet. It’s as big as you want it to be, kind of like the dick of that guy you dreamed about last night, Dan.
