Perry also says people would prefer their president served in the military. And he came pretty close to accusing Ben Bernanke of treason, too. Perry is awfully quick to accuse folks of treason, considering he openly flirted with secession not so long ago. He also tried to convince a Chinese company suspected of spying on America to bring their business to Texas against the wishes of the George W. Bush and Obama administrations.   7. I almost didn’t even comment. What’s the point? The guy will say anything to paint the government as tyrannical and antithetical to his beliefs. Reason, logic and truth be damned. I am already tired of this campaign and it’s only three days in.

  17. Granted Perry is a moron, but I’m not at all sure that Obama loves this country. Obama obviously doesn’t care about the Constitution or raising the standard of living for the majority of Americans. I know he loves getting elected and compromising, though.

  18. @16: the military rarely “defends” america. it invades, which is offense. i’ll concede tora bora (which we largely outsourced, & botching it), but other than that, WW2? shooting OBL in the face wasn’t exactly self-defense. iraq sure as shit wasn’t self-defense. korea, vietnam? “defense” from the spectre of creeping socialism?

    And I’ll say to you what I told a tour guide in Italy who mouthed that nonsense about American agression. We saved Europes ass twice in a few decades, and have spent the time since defending the effete idiots at our expense. We didn’t ask for a dollar or an acre of ground for our trouble and loss of American life, we just did the right thing expecting nothing in return. All we need from Europe is a polite thank you, and maybe a check for keeping them safe since the end of WW2.

  22. My grandfather was the greatest man I’ve ever known. He was a paratrooper in WWII, shot through the leg while fighting against Rommel in North Africa. A lifelong Democrat, married to an equally fearless union organizer, he once specifically told me that he believed FDR was one of the greatest men who ever lived. I still have his Croix de Guerre and Purple Heart hanging in my bedroom, and think about him often. Most of my great-uncles also served in that war, including one who was assigned to “clean-up duty” in Hiroshima after Japan was conquered, and was never the same afterward.

    And the military is, in large part nowadays, a quasi-religious, self-congratulating, deficit-driving welfare program.

    I honor your grandfathers service to this country in war. Too bad he and his wife did it a dis-service with regard to the organized crime that is the union. And that he completely took the wrong view of FDR, the worst president this country ever has had or likely will have.

    As for calling the service of my family and friends welfare, you also are cordially invited to go to hell. Comparing their dedication and loyalty to the begging of those who refuse to work for their bread or housing or medical care isn’t just insulting, it’s libel.

  25. @24- What you posted @19 is irrefutable because it’s a pure appeal to emotion.

    The facts are: America hasn’t faced at threat to our borders in well over a century. The Japanese took a few frozen islands and bombed the shit out of a parked fleet, but there was never a threat we’d be “speaking Japanese.”

    In Korea our forces were attacked while defending an allied country. The Soviets weren’t involved, it was the Chinese. But in that case we did actually help keep out communists…probably the only time.

    In Vietnam we decided to join a war in progress, which was a lost cause. Communism probably spread farther as a result of our intervention there.

    And the rest of Asia? Well, China is still run by Communists. India and Pakistan both flirted with the Soviets endlessly. We gave Afghanistan to the Russians and let them enjoy a taste of never-ending insurgency… What did the US military do to stop any of that?

    Nothing.
