Witnesses to an assault in Cal Anderson Park over the weekend told police that a gang of young men has been randomly attacking drunk and vulnerable people in the park, a police report says.
On August 1, police were called to Cal Anderson on 11th and Pine around 10:30 p.m. after someone called 911 to report a group men beating up another man in the north end of the park.
When officers arrived, they found the victim of the assault sitting near the fountain in the park. Initially, the man told police “nothing happened and that he fell,” the report says, telling officers that he was from Poland, did not want to give his name and did not want the police involved. Medics arrived on scene and treated the man, who had small cuts on his face, chest, knees, and hands.
Although the man initially didn’t want to talk to police, he discovered his wallet was missing and opened up to the officers. The man, who is in his 40s, told police he was walking through the north end of the park when a group of males jumped him. Two of the men—described in the report as a white male and a black male, both between 18 and 21 years old—punched him, knocked him to the ground, and kicked him, the report says.
A witness at the scene told officers he believed the Polish man had been targeted at random and was “horrified by the brutality.” Another witness told police they have seen the gang of men in the park many times before and that “they pick fights with vulnerable or intoxicated victims.” The witness also said the men are usually in Cal Anderson Park around sundown or before the park closes at 11:30 p.m.

Guess what gang of thugs! I’m from Alaska and pick on me and I’ll spray your eyes out with PEPPER SPRAY made for BEARS! I will BLIND YOUR ASSES!
Oh, I saw blood over by the fountain the other day–this may be how it got there. Ugh, hope this does not become a regular thing.
But wait! This can’t happen! We have surveillance cameras in Cal Anderson park!
Please, can some brave soul do your best drunken impression and lure them in so you can open up a can of whoopass on them so we can send a message to these jackasses. The hill is becoming entirely too violent and vulnerable. We need more stories of successful self defense.
Aw.. white and black kids beating random strangers….together!
Is this that post racial society I’ve been hearing so much about?
Hooligans!
As a Polish man I have to agree that we are vulnerable. That’s why we get allllllll the ladies (or dudes).
I’ve seen these kids. They hang around on the payphone on the east entrance of the park near the middle. I think I’ll be walking up broadway on my way home from now on.
@4
This sounds like the perfect opportunity to create the worlds first flash vigilante-mob. If they don’t read Slog everything will work out fine. You all pretend to be passed out on the bench with the taser under you print copy of the Stranger I will go for a tipsy dip in the fountain and when they jump, we strike! What time is sundown?
Seriously, I hate thugs. I’m not usually in the park without my daughter so I’m probably safe but I hate what happens to the park and the neighborhood when shit like this goes on. People should stop it before it gets started. I love how much use Cal Anderson gets by all sorts of people doing all sorts of things. I would hate to see that changed one bit.
That is a lot of hate.
Maybe the budget cuts that will result in park closures won’t be needed. Most of Seattle’s parks are pretty scary, even in broad daylight.
If folks don’t want to go to the park, you can’t stop ’em!
Juggalos….
What a bunch of little assholes. I really hope that with the east precinct being so close that SPD can manage to bust (and charge and convict them) quickly.
a bit sad/pathetic when you consider that the police station is half a block away…
Three words. Concealed Weapons Permit.
Hmm and I was considering moving from Oakland Ca, back to Seattle. Maybe not.
@4 and 8… I’m in.
How AWESOME would it be for those losers to get (non-violently)taken down by a smallish woman! I have mace on my key-chain.
Pathetic Senseless violence
