I hate guns and avoid them, so I had no idea that the sort of Glock that Loughner used is quite expensive, around $1,000.
Cops are looking into where he got the money to buy the gun. This could get very interesting. . .

Didn’t you know it’s a blood libel to investigate the attempted murder of Democrats?
probably not that interesting. he worked shitty jobs and lived with his folks, right? so saving 1K from minimum wage paychecks wouldn’t be that hard, Or Xtube?
$1,000? WTF? A new Glock 19 is more like $500 and 33rd mags are $36.

Your little sack of weed probably has a street value of $200,000 according to the police too.
Silver had a 64.78% run in the last six months. If Loughner literally bought into gold and silver, he could sell some to get the gun.
My guess is he sold his hair and his watch to buy the gun.
If he paid a grand for that stuff he got a pretty bad deal.
Then again, lone psychopaths probably aren’t great comparison shoppers.
Nice Zevon reference…
@ Y’all
the $1,000 thing is what I saw in the story. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong.
Sure, he lived at home, coulda saved his whole paychecks from shitty jobs (that he’d been fired from) coulda stolen cash out of mom’s purse.
But what if someone bought him the gun? Now we go from lone lunatic assassin to conspiracy. Could happen, might not, who knows. And I’d bet that if he was backed up by someone, that someone was assuming he’d end up like Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. Some other gun-totin’ Arizonan’d’ve blown his head off, no blow-back.
Just speculation.
Don’t you get a Glock for opening a bank account there?
Nobody is blaming you for the number, it’s in the article so whoever said it is wrong, or Laughner got ripped off. If somebody bought it for him it would certainly raise serious questions. The Columbine shooters got some (all?) of their guns illegally, so it’s certainly worth investigating.
C’mon, Chicago Fan – they all said Loughner’s just an excitable boy.
@ Gus
You win.
A new high in opportunist desperation. No mean feat, considering the competition. Well done.
I’ve never liked Glocks, too blocky. All my guns are Rugers, but that’s because I’m sentimental.
“My guess is he sold his hair and his watch to buy the gun”
A gun made from a haircomb and watch-chain?
I don’t think the point is whether he could afford the gun – that’s certainly possible. The question is why he bought this particular gun. Would someone with little money go through the effort of saving up for a $1000 gun (ok, $600 gun), when he could buy one for much less? Maybe, but it’s worth asking the question.
The total cost of what he was carrying is what ran $1,000. 1 knife, the glock, 4 magazines, and presumably the .22 caliber hand gun that’s been mentioned in many other news stories.
The linked article didn’t mention a second gun, but if that is the case it makes more sense. Depending on the gun, a .22 could be $300+.
@ 13
No opportunistic desperation on MY part. I have no dog in this fight: if he acted alone, great, whatever.
But if he didn’t, then everyone who’s jumping all over anyone who even suggests that this violence was generated by the political discourse of the Right, with its violent rhetoric, is going to have some ‘splainin’ to do. If he had help, this is huge.
And that’s what ongoing police investigations look into: Facts. There’s also his dad chasing him into the desert after he saw him removing a black bag from the trunk of a car. Bag still missing. What was in it?
Once all the facts are out, we can evaluate the whole situation. In the meantime, it’s very interesting how people want to shut down even talk about it.
Looks like the $1000 figure is for the gun, the knife, two standard mags, and two extended mags.
Early reports said he had used a fully automatic weapon, but apparently that wasn’t the case. Later they revealed he used a Glock. Am I the only one that thought of akimbo G18s?
And note: Glock sales surging.

Yeah, my man gus FTW!
The Glock is like the Toyota pickup of handguns, they are tough, reliable, and have a good overall reputation. I imagine the sales surge is a combination of people seeking some sense of security and people concerned about potential legal restrictions. The first reason is overly emotional and those people should take a little more time to consider it. I doubt most emotional-panic buyers will be the kind to seek appropriate training. The second reason is highly unlikely given the current makeup of the House.
A Glock 19 has been on my list for a while, I just don’t have the money to buy one at the moment.
I thought Canuck won @9, but that’s just my opinion.
@16, the Glock is one of the few handguns that have 33 round magazines available for them. He had two of these along with the standard magazines that came with the gun. If his intention was to mow down a large number of people with a weapon he could conceal effectively, he chose well. It could also be further proof of premeditation.
We’re all winners here on Slog.
I don’t want a Glock, I want an H&K. And those probably ARE $1000.
I thought we already established that Sarah Palin bought him the gun, Glen Beck bought him the ammunition, and Rush Limbaugh told him to do it…
