You are probably aware that the city just elected two environmentalists named Mike—as mayor (Mike McGinn) and as city councilman (Mike O’Brien)—over candidates who were well-connected and better funded. How, exactly? Largely because of a ingenious ground game carried out by Sierra Club volunteers. Both men are former Sierra Club leaders. And Sierra Club knows how to organize. If you care about the environment, are looking for someplace to volunteer, and like talking about your ideas for the city with people in power, take note: Sierra Club is recruiting new volunteers. The volunteer recruitment event on Monday, November 30, will feature an appearance by O’Brien and other leaders.
According to the site:
Are you energized by the election results and fired up about the power of grassroots organizing? Do you want to help:
• Lead the movement to create a renewable energy future and get Washington off coal;
• Build a sustainable transportation system; and
• Elect the next generation of progressive environmental champions?
All the info is here. (And the guy to contact if you have questions? Just so happens to be this guy.)

would you like to solicit people at their front doors while they’re eating dinner?
would you like to harass people walking on 1st avenue like you’re a larouchie?
@1 Would you like to be a complete douchebag and criticize people who are working hard for a better environment?
Thank you Frizzelle, Sierra Club is indeed a great way to learn how a real ground game grassroots campaign is created and executed. It’s also a great place to meet people who care about climate change, protecting clean water and getting superior candidates elected.
As to the incorrect/semi-lucid comment placed by Max Solomon… not worth the time commenting – he’s probably just upset that his fave candidate Hutchison lost.
Would you like your non-profit to sell donors’ personal information to other organizations?
Fuck the Sierra Club.
well yes, yes i would! all solicitors are ‘working hard’ for all their causes; WASHPIRG, Save the Children, Fraternal Order of Police, Greenpeace, etc. they’re still soliciting.
becky, i can be a douchebag who doesn’t like soliciting and still vote for Dow.
Becky’s right.
The rest of you are sad sad people who just hate that we won and we won big, by refusing to play your game the way you wanted us to.
Get used to it. The Green Machine can’t be stopped.
Does their platform include environmental justice issues yet ?
No? Ok then keep your wilderness calendar and screw the polar bears.
As a mountain biker I no longer support the sierra club, they are out to ban mountain biking from as many places as possible. The less access cyclists have the more they have to drive further away, how does that help the environment.
This is a genuine question: what did they do that was ingenious?
Sierra Club is full of a bunch of former hall monitors and junior high crossing guards who have now found a way to officially jam their authoritarian views down the throats of others. I could only hope that the Sierra Club and its members could be as successful at increasing endangered and threatened wildlife populations as the hunters they despise. I could only wish that the Sierra Club members would put their own money towards their causes as hunters and fishermen do rather than beg off the taxpayer. But, ultimately, the Sierra Club is rife with unimaginative pukes who live to promote the unproven, scientifically flawed ideas of committed lifelong cattle who feed from a trough replenished through the efforts of others.
