Yes, this question is months old and yes, there’s a good chance it’s a fake. HOWEVER, I’ve watched enough Pet Psychic to know that whether or not to trust cat advice is a real issue facing many women. For instance, your cat might signal that you should dump your boyfriend by continually shitting on his ficus. But is your cat telling you this because s/he thinks he’s not right for you, because s/he doesn’t think you should be living together before marriage, or simply because s/he is being a total cunt?

At crux of this issue is whether or not your cat, whom you love and adore, is any less qualified to give you medical or relationship advice than conservative Christians, psychics, or strangers found on the internet. To the polls!

  1. Cienna, your slam of Christians in this poll shows an unfortunate level of intolerance and bigotry. Many Christians support abortion rights — in fact, most mainline Protestant denominations. Do you really need to contribute to the confusion and disrespect we get, even as we push for marriage and abortion rights for everyone?

  2. Sandman,

It’s not how many Christians are pro life. It’s how many pro lifers are Christians. See what I’m saying?

    Urgutha,

I had to watch that animation again and it still makes me laugh. That will never stop being funny.

I am truley sorry for your lots

  3. @1: be visible in your support to those that oppose such rights, not just to those that support them. I hear this complaint all the time, but I don’t see very much from Christian voices telling the fundies that you don’t agree with them. That the fundies have successfully framed the debate as Christian vs Non is on the moderate Christians.

And to the post, this doesn’t fit neatly in the poll options, but if you’re considering taking advise from your cat about anything but cat feeding and petting, you shouldn’t be having children.

  4. Since any cat has good reason to fear and loathe any young human brought into the home, said cat should recuse him/herself from the case.

  5. 5

Opposition to abortion rights is coming almost entirely from Christians. And you have a problem with pointing that out because you are worried about how it might reflect on you?

  6. @4 — thanks for the advice (which I’m obviously taking by posting here), but it is writers like Cienna who insist on promoting the idea that Christians are uniformly against abortion rights. No coverage is ever given to pro-choice Christians. We’re ignored in media like SLOG then painted with the same brush as all other Christians.

Imagine if Cienna’s post had said:

No–Cats give the worst abortion advice.
Yes–If Jews can do it, so can Senora Sanchez.

Why is that offensive, and why does the same sentence with “Christian” inserted get a free pass? Some of us liberal Christians come to SLOG to be part of a progressive conversation. Why shouldn’t SLOG be held to the same progressive standards of respect that everyone else has to uphold? Sorry, this is a low blow in the name of a dumb joke and it promotes unfair stereotypes about people who are working right alongside other pro-choice folk to make the world safe for women’s who need a choice.

  7. @1, I’ve updated to say conservative Christians after receiving a very sweet email from a pastor. But in general, I’d say the onus is on you and Christians like you to prove that there are good Christians out there–not me. Not when I’ve been personally fed lies about abortion and women’s health in general by many, many Christians.

  8. @6- Precisely. As the house cat by nature has a vested interest in assuring that it remains the center of attention in any household, any advice that said cat gives on this matter should be ignored for reasons of obvious bias.

  9. You are right, Cienna. It is up to pro-choice Christians to make it known that not all Christains want to belittle, demean, and terrorize vulnerable women – I too have seen it happen. When I was working night shift in downtown Pittsburgh, I walked past one of the larger women’s health clinics in the city on the way to my bus stop. Every Saturday morning, there would be protestors out there shouting at women as they tried to enter, calling them names, calling out their sinfulness. Now, only a small fraction of those women were there to have abortions. Most were there for routine gynecological care, birth control (though given the fact that most protestors were Catholic, they weren’t thrilled about that, either), or even prenatal care. They saw me wearing my college t-shirts or sweatshirts (I went to a Catholic university), and tried multiple times to get me to join them. I refused, and told them I didn’t believe in what they are doing. I believe that all life is sacred…and that includes the women who for whatever reason choose to have abortions.

For what it is worth, the clergy/family health insurance plan for my denomination covers elective abortions. That isn’t without controversy, but church leadership knows it’s the right thing to do.

  10. @8 – Somehow I’ve missed all the Jews protesting at clinics, burning clinics, and shooting doctors or standing by while other Jews took those actions. Oh wait it’s never happened!

Despite the lies of Representative King, Muslims turn in their co-religionists for potential terrorist acts and their organizations routinely speak out against Islamic extremists and radicals.

While some liberal Christian denominations are pro-choice and speak out for gay rights, they are derided and mocked by the leaders of most other prominent denominations. Moderate and conservative Christians and Catholics sit by quietly allowing the radicals and extremists to dominate the public dialog.

  11. Sandman, if you are so worried about the message that the rest of the world is getting about Christians, why don’t you try to change it by being the Christian you want us to see, rather than whining about some imagined persecution?

  12. @8: No, you’re not taking my advice by posting here. You’re completely missing the point by posting here. Post your support for abortion rights and gay rights as a Christian at WND or Rapture Ready or NOM or other groups and sites that are opposed to those rights. Those are the ones that need to hear it from moderate Christians.

  13. oh, and PS @8: I’m happy to call out religious Jews for their religion based bullshit. Same for Muslims and every other religion. Christians are the most visible voice of opposition to gay and abortion rights, so they are the group that gets the attention. And when asshats like Yehuda Levin get involved, they get called out too.

  14. We have a massive overpopulation problem on this planet, so any excuse not to bring a fetus to term is a good one until we get the population levels back down to a sustainable level. If you really want a kid, adopt, millions of children need parents. In the unlikely event your genes deserve to be propagated, we’ll let you know.

  15. Like any other advice-giver, consider deeply the possible bias of the source. Yes, cats are selfish and can be whimsically evil, but that doesn’t mean they are wrong.

  16. Sorry Cienna, I just can’t seem to share a chuckle over your silly tee-hees over abortion. And I’m a very pro-choice gal.

  17. Well, it’s too late now. But she should have aborted. Not because the cat wanted her to. Simply that she clearly didn’t want to have a child very much, if her cat having an issue with the pregnancy was enough to make her consider an abortion. And you shouldn’t have a child unless you really, really want to and are truly prepared to take on the responsibility. It’s a huge amount of work, and children ought to have caretakers who actively want to take that on, rather than ones who will resent them for it. They should have caretakers who have some idea what they are getting into and truly want that. Sure, it won’t always work out that way, but when it’s still possible to make a choice, you should try to prevent a child from being placed into a situation where it will not have a caretaker who truly wants that role.

  18. Yes, clearly she should have an abortion because SHE’S FUCKING CRAZY. Or else she’s a fucking idiot. Either way, anyone who has to wonder whether she should have a baby because she heard her cat say “terminate it” should absolutely not have a baby.

  19. @19 – What makes you think I’m a “moderate Christian”? Just want to understand your argument, which I believe goes like this: bigotry is ok if it’s based on ignorance, and when it’s based on ignorance it’s the victim’s obligation to correct the bigot’s mistake. Just want to make sure I get it.

In the meantime, here are some links for you:

    a) Planned Parenthood of WWashington has a Christian chaplain who advocates w/i the church and beyond for choice. His name is Vincent Lachina and his org if http://www.ppvoteswa.org

    b) Liberal Christians like me work to ensure free choice through organizations like the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice http://rcrc.org/ which is at the forefront of efforts to protect the right to choose

    c) Denominations like the United Methodist Church (second largest Protestant denomination in America) are solidly behind reproductive choice: http://www.umc.org/site/c.lwL4KnN1LtH/b.…

    d) Look at Pro-Life websites if you’d like to see denominational differences: http://www.pregnantpause.org/people/wher… gives an overview showing support from United Church of Christ (1.1 million members), Presbyterian Church (USA) (2.4 million member), Episcopal Church (2.1 million members), Evangelical Lutheran Church (4.7 million members), and American Baptist Churches (1.4 million members) in addition to the United Methodist Church (8 million members).

Thanks for giving this opportunity to tell the truth. Hopefully bigotry against Christians can now be informed by the truth — that mainline Protestants support abortion rights.

  20. I don’t understand why Conservative Christians own this issue. I mean they’re so pro violence and military, why do they have a problem with killing babies and family members just like Abraham almost did? At the same time, liberals will bend over backwards to save baby seals in the same of life being precious. But won’t life a finger save the baby babies? This is just my way of saying BOTH sides of the debate are fucked up.
