Here is a chart of virginity rates at Wellesley College. The number on each bar is the percentage of students who are virgins:

Neuroscientists are freaky at a very young age, looks like. I’m especially fond of this one comment in response to the chart:
Ok….youre either fat or ugly if you didnt have sex before you made it college….this is retarded….I dont even know a virgin. And I am the “geek” youre talking about, Bio major – pre med for your stupid ass. Ive been with 25 girls, so this thing is retarded
Not to get all English major-y on the commenter or anything, but methinks he doth protest too much.

It’s like I was telling Ian, the best course to take in college is Anthropology, closely followed by Sociology.
People take such courses because they want to know more about what makes them tick, and most Anthro students are very sexy women who have fewer inhibitions than Psych majors – Psych majors tend to have way more hangups than usual.
At least, that was the case at three colleges I went to, and apparently it’s true in Seattle as well.
Hmm. Well, I was Anthropology and Chemistry, which are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Maybe I had some inner conflict about my sluttiness.
BTW, Studio Art at 0% is pretty funny.
How are French and English majors tied? Perhaps this survey was given before the French majors went on their study-abroad trips?
also, art majors rule.
The median age in the U.S. for starting to have sex is 17, so it’s not that “retarded” to conclude that plenty of college students haven’t had sex yet. Besides, I’m sure those slutty majors are among the most popular.
For Studio Art majors, being a slut isn’t a perk, it’s a requirement.
Seems about right for the mathematics students. Good lord, I remember those days before sex…
not a perfect relationship, but the subjects skew heavily toward right brained = sluts, left brained = homely prudes.
God, I sure love me a doctor who uses the word “retarded” twice in one and a half run-on sentences. Good luck with med school, asshole.
When was this poll taken? Is this a certain class? I think all the bars would be much taller if this were a freshman poll vs senior poll.
The whole thing looks like bullshit. Is the source, Counterpoint, even available to look at? It’s all third and fourth hand hearsay about data that was probably cooked to begin with.
Some of this might have to do with Wellesley being an all-girls university, just sayin’
I was a virgin until midway through my freshman year in art school, and at 42 have had one (1) sexual partner, the one I lost my virginity with…
Wellesley is a pricey women’s college, right? Them’s some interesting variables. Your pre-med friend failed to take the surveyed demographic in to account before he let himself become offended.
Unless he’s an upper class young woman living on the east coast. Then nevermind.
Couldn’t it just mean that anthropology, etc., majors just lie more?
*sighs* I love my subject, but Mathematicians are far too prudish. Stupid fellow math grad students thinking I’m a crazy slut for being all open about sex. Looking at the chart, and given my love for the geeks, I’m thinking there is a reason I’ve hooked up with so many computer scientists……..
i went to wellesley. i think the computer scientists are lying.
I’m kind of surprised about the comp sci stat…and I *am* a comp sci major…though, I suppose since Wellesley is an all women’s college might lean to their advantage, because CS is still so divided by gender, if they are gaming/socializing with other CS majors from other schools, they have a huge gender advantage if they’re straight…
There are virgins out there? Where???
Perhaps mr bio major took a snooze in stats class because the last time I checked, 72% did not mean the same as 100%.
hoo hoo ha ha ha funny… now take my wife — please!
This is really interesting! I knew there must be disparity between fields but 83% of math majors are virgins?! and zero studio art majors?!! I would like to see stats from other schools, since Wellsley is definitely not a representative sample. Its gotta be harder to get laid there if you’re a straight woman. If you’re lesbian on the other hand…
If 70% of the International Relations majors at an uppercrust-y, mostly white American college are virgins…perhaps it is because they are saving themselves for fucking the rest of the world.
Titillating, but ultimately useless.
@24 – not if you’re still picking your major.
If all the Wellesley girls were laid end to end, I wouldn’t be surprised.
23 wins.
UGH! God chemistry was brutal. Actually, it was more brutal when I went to the west coast. I was a late bloomer as it is, but by the time I figured it out, I was locked in a lab in grad school, in the comparatively speaking … prudish Pacific Northwest. (Eugene, OR can burn to the ground).
The one thing you notice when you first get there, is the number of adult shops. One in just about every neighborhood, and lots and lots of strip clubs.
The fact that I actually enjoyed intense, carefree, but not scumbag sex made me feel like a fricken mentally disabled person with a sex drive. It was unfortunate, inconvenient, and inappropriate and best to try to ignore.
I’d keep an eye on those “Undeclared” people…
A) Anthro girls are slutty. I know, I dated one. She cheated on me a lot, but made up for it by having sex with me almost daily for years.
B) Wellseley is not a representative sample of anything but elite women-only universities.
i was a neurosci major dating a mathematician. always the exceptions, no?
Dating females in the hard sciences (chemistry, physics …) are brutal too. They are so unsexed. They perpetually discuss unsexy topics like perpetual commitment (regardless of level of misery),marriage, and expectations of (even though they know DAMN well that careers will most likely drive them several thousand miles away). It’s like they can’t live in the moment, and because there are so few women in these fields. They don’t have to. There is some dumbass lonely guy they can whip along.
Obviously there are exceptions, but you get the idea. The net result is a lot of passionless long distance relationships.
Something that the recovering catholic with parents that were “forced” togethor just cringes at …
Dorks.
The data is from a 2001 joint survey of MIT and Wellesley by joint college publication Counterpoint Magazine, which later became a Wellesley-only publication, and which may since have ceased publication entirely.
No reason to consider the data a reliable indicator of behavior then, much less now.
Dang. I was I Biology and Chemistry major, and I wasn’t a virgin. Apparently I didn’t read the fine print when I picked my majors.
hahahaha studio art 0%
As a former studio art major who spent a lot of time with other studio art majors, I can state from experience that Wellesley’s 0% is highly representative of studio art majors in general.
It must be all that life drawing.
Huh. My two freakiest exgirlfriends from high school both went on to get math degrees in college.
Speaking as a recent anthropology graduate, I feel confident enough to say my peers were among the more, erm, uninhibited people at the university. My first anthro class during freshman year was all boobs, bare feet, pregnant chicks, and discussions about sexual pleasure across the globe.
the better comment is the one below the retarded sex-having med student.
“Funny, that chart would also work if the description was “Percent of students that are employed currently.” “
ftw
Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa once wrote that to think is to not understand and that the only innocence is not to think.
If the only human commandment were to speak of what you love and not of what you know, then woe to those loveless sinners in the Math Dept.
…but uhhh, Studio Art hubba hubba!
@26 Thank god somebody quoted Dorothy Parker!
anywho,
I am art design major and yeah, we are a little bit touchy-feely in the sluttyist of ways. Oh, and two of my worst lays were dual psych/chem majors. The odds are I just wouldn’t lay a math major unless he had a fantastic russian accent and a gorgeous racketball player body… but thats a completely differant story. I would certainly tap that.
Sleep with 25 women and you’re suddenly an expert, eh? Women better watch out for that one! Mothers lock up your daughters!
Love this. I was at Wellesley, and I was one of (I think) five anthro majors who graduated the year this was published… uhhh yeah, one quarter of that sex-positive 80% was all me. “Counterpoint” was a chatty little magazine, more humorous than statistically rigorous, so do take it with a grain of salt and maintain a sense of humor.
i know one math major who’s v. hot, v. kinky and another whos a total dog + uptight as hell. numbers aren’t everything.
Yeah, neurosluts! Way to show up the other nerds, and the philosophers too!
This data is 1) about 8 years old, 2) hardly scientifically accurate, since 100 people tops responded to the survey, and 3) doesn’t make any sense. why ANYONE would believe it as hard, scientific data is beyond me.
for some reason, it pops up every single year on some website or another, and this year it’s been wildly popular.
Regardless of the data’s accuracy, all I can say to the college virgins is hang in there. The nerds really do end up with the better sex lives later. As women mature, they get tired of the pretty jocks that do nothing for them.
@47 …
Word of caution. A friend of mine, an older woman mind you, met a guy, fortyish science guy. on a VERY expensive online dating sight. Designed to be for sophisticated professionals. Impressed as she was with his insight and intelegence … he proved undatable. Well, the guy was an absolute wreck and apparently was incapable of engaging in physical intimacy. At first we thought he was gay … but then why the expensive web site?
Well obviously, he was either virgin or so far removed from physical intimacy, he had no clue what to do.
I guess, good things come to those who wait, but you aren’t going to catch a bus, cab, ride, whatever when you are waiting on stranded abandoned road.
#39…fuck you! going to college doesn’t have anything to do with getting a job or having a successful carreer. anybody can sit in a cubicle.
#46, some people will believe anything with numbers on. Viz Madoff’s wild success. Sad but true.
