Unless you have special radar for things that aren’t actually scandals, you probably missed the excellent coverage at Seattlest by Sarah Lloyd—their news editor and The Stranger‘s former news intern—on the state GOP’s attempt to mire Jay Inslee in a “scandal” over an 11-year-old $1000 campaign contribution. Inslee, our Congressman in the 1st District, accepted a donation from Anthony Weiner long before “sexting” became a word people actually use*.

In posts on Twitter and in the Everett Herald last week, the state GOP started calling for Inslee to “send back Weiner’s tainted money” or give it away—because that 11-year-old donation was tainted by Weiner’s weiner, or something—so Inslee gave $1000 away. To Republican fave organization… Planned Parenthood.

Ahahahahahaha!

Naturally, this incensed a fresh crop of level-headed conservatives.

Calling themselves Mainstream Republicans of Washington (MRW), they accused Inslee of besmirching Planned Parenthood’s good name with an association with Anthony Weiner, presumably instead of crying about how their party’s prudishness resulted in a sizable donation to the devil herself.

And Planned Parenthood was like, um, actually we’re a citizen-funded nonprofit American conservatives are working hard to completely defund, Jay Inslee has been our friend for a while, thanks for the donation.

Here’s the latest from Lloyd’s most recent post:

Despite MRW obviously pushing the utmost authorities on pro-choice activism in the state forward, I figured I’d ask someone a tiny bit closer to the issue what they thought.

“Congressman Inslee has a long history of standing with Planned Parenthood and standing up for women’s health, both personally, and in the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Planned Parenthood Votes Political Director Dana Laurent, adding that the group is “overreaching by talking about an 11 year old contribution.” Inslee, she says, has always supported Planned Parenthood, even when he’s not trying to pass off a Weiner donation.

Go read the rest it!

And confidential to the Washington State GOP: While it might be in your best interest to stop trying to make fetch happen and maybe just go back to bitching about how much you hate cervical cancer screenings because they cause promiscuity or whatever the fuck (ZZZZZZzzzzz), please keep up the good work of prioritizing women’s health.

*Do they though? Like, outside of Cosmo and mainstream TV news stations? Can somebody please clear this up for me?

  2. “missed the excellent coverage”

Guess so, because I read this article twice and still have no idea what you are talking about.

  3. @Sarah and Hanna: Of course! Your pieces were funny and great. Thanks for reading! I would love to write for you guys, but alas and alack, I’ll be moving in August for a (HIGHLY PRACTICAL) MFA…
