The moron talking heads on Fox just went 4-1 for the Packers. The lone dissenter: Terry Bradshaw, brain-damaged former Pittsburgh quarterback, who last week was the only one to pick the Bears. So, the Packers seem a mortal lock.
And now it’s the Forced Patriotism? They’re having some “NFL Legends” read the Declaration of Indefuckingpendence? Mother of mercy. Where’s the beer?
Luckily, the NFL might not be around forever. Dig this New Yorker story about Chronic Traumatic Encephelopathy (in other words, dying young with Alzheimersy symptoms because of getting many many repeated concussions over many years). Football as we see it today—huge players, huge hits, high speed—is as big a dinosaur as boxing was in 1975. And boxing didn’t know it yet either.

I hear Jay Cutler ran a 10K this morning.
The New England Patriots (aka Tom Brady and his luscious hair) are not playing, and I apparently bought the “wrong” beer….hope things are better where you are. Do you have dessert, to go along with the cheese and sausage? Stale sheet cake, or is that a sibling-specific fetish?
The Forced Patriotism is all part of Fox’s contribution to the Fascist Revolution. This is how it’s done, folks. Propaganda, jingoism, and a concerted campaign against the government you want to depose.
No ones cares about the health of NFL players. As far as boxers go Benny Paret and Davey Moore both famously died in the ring in the early 60’s – did that make any difference? Boxing was killed by incompetent management.
Chicago Fan are you implying boxing wasn’t succeeded by Professional Head Kick and Death Choke?
Yeah. Good thing the NFL won’t be around forever so we can hurry up and get that Rollerball league and Deathrace going full steam.
Honestly, it’s all concentual and the overpay is insane so forgive me if I can’t muster much anxiety over it all.
I know it’s not the NFL but stay with me here. The New Jersey Devils are valued at $148 million.
That’s only $48 million more than the value of their highest paid player’s contract and it’s a shit ton less than this year’s entire NJ Devils payroll.
The pro sports landscape doesn’t change because people lose their appetites for violent physical competition or because athletes suddenly value their own health and longevity at over $100+ million. These insitution become extinct when the bubble bursts. The price it takes to meet player and agent demands far exceeds the league and the team’s ability to generate revenue.
But you guys are all fucking geniuses right? I’m just spinning my wheels here. Somehow there’s going to be a seachange where Americans fall in love with golf, tennis and cycling and athletes wise up to trading long healthy lives for being a billionaire before age 40. Don’t know how but it just will, right? Because that’s the right way for things to be.
I would agree with David. The death of football isn’t coming anytime soon. Millions upon millions of football fans won’t give up their sport overnight, or even in a generation.
Boxing is still around, and instead of dying out it spawned all that extreme kicky-fighty death-cage-o’ doom crap as well.
Hahahaha losers doing Forced Patriotism. We don’t read the Charter of Rights and Freedoms during the Grey Cup. Is your country in trouble?
i liked the pre-superbowl patriotic part because it let us warm up for all the snide counter-commentary that persisted throughout the game (hint: most of it had to do with rape).
It’s worse than that, Chicago Fan.
Did you know that 20% of all active NFL players get HIV?
