…even the owners of pit bulls don’t want them to have puppies.

If Konig had his way, he probably wouldn’t want to be fixed. But his owner jumped at the chance to have him neutered.

“I think it’s our responsibility, especially with this breed, to take a step up, to be responsible for what we’re going to do with this breed,” said owner Cassandra Lynn Juneau.

For Juneau, who’s currently out of work, it sure helped that Konig’s procedure was free…

At 2 years old, Konig, said to be a “sweetheart,” was showing his tougher side, going after other male dogs and even puppies. His owner hopes he’ll now lose some of that aggressive edge.

  1. Oh Christ. Listen, all dogs –ALL DOGS– who are not part of a responsible, registered breeding program (that’s people who put time, money, and considerable effort into breeding dogs for the purpose of furthering the breed and eliminating health issues in the bloodlines, NOT your cousin who thinks that his lab is so cute and wouldn’t it be great if she had puppies) should be fixed. Be they poodle or pit bull, male or female, ALL FUCKING DOGS.

It prevents disease and helps mitigate aggression IN ALL BREEDS, and makes it so your family Fido doesn’t inadvertently contribute to the pet overpopulation issue.

  2. You know, through selective breeding, you could turn pit bulls into cute bundles of fur that would fit in your purse and take off your arm with one bite …

  3. @2 – That certainly seems to be the point, and it’s a point that I think we’re all aware of (I hope), but still, it’s a nice change of pace from Dan’s horror story breed ban advocacy posts.

  4. If we can say that a certain breed of dog is aggressive by nature, what does that mean for genetics as a whole? Can we say that certain breeds of HUMANS are aggressive by nature?

  5. Better yet, why not require everybody (including the breeders) to neuter their pit bulls. No more breeding, no more pit bulls. Problem solved.

  6. At least they are doin th right thing. very few owners of these dogs behave responsibly like that tho. Both neutering and spaying should be something mandatory when purchasing pits from any pet store. Licenses should be issued to breed these dogs.

  7. @5
“You don’t wanna mess with rappers man. This one dude messed with them, they cut his body off, and just left him with a cock”

“Dave, don’t you mean they cut his cock off?”

“No, they held his dick, and cut his body off”

  8. Yeah, some pit bulls may be real cute and nice, however they are physically superior to other dogs. Most dogs bite your arm, you lose a little blood. A pit bull bites your arm, you may lose use of your arm, if it is not bitten off. They can too easily inflict a lot of damage. Keeping one is like keeping a bomb around. Sure it might not go off, if you are a responsible owner. Might not.

  9. @11, the same could be said for any large, muscular dog breed.

I’ve met too many friendly family-pet pit bulls to believe they’re inherently dangerous. The bully breeds are definitely prone to bad ownership and irresponsible breeding, however. Shelters are so tragically full of pit bulls- these free/low-cost spay/neuter programs are a wonderful thing.

  10. I work with low-income pet owners in the Seattle Metro area, and it is a sad fact that despite a free spay/neuter system that has been in place for years, some owners refuse to alter their pets. They want to “Let her have a litter or two” before considering a spaying, and they want their males “tough”. Precisely the wrong sort of people to own large, possibly aggressive dogs are the sort drawn to them. My dog is a 105 lb 1/2 pit 1/2 lab, who turned out to be terribly timid. I didn’t know that when he was a puppy though, so I had him neutered as soon as humanly possible.
Any large male dog is a potential problem, and why burden yourself with a ticking time bomb if you could have a happy, safe pet instead? We don’t need any more pit bulls. Instead of breeding more, we need to rehab all the ruined ones at all the shelters in this country.

  11. Pets should be spayed & neutered. Kitties, Dogs…all of em (unless they are being Shown or Reputably bred). SO MANY die in shelters every year and there seems to be a correlation between reproductive status and aggression ( some will argue this)….BUT in 2008: 33 dogs were involved in fatal attacks on humans in the U.S. Of those, 26 were unaltered.
Makes sense that 2 factors are at work 1) Irresponsible OWNERS fail to alter their pets AND have pets that are more likely to attack and 2) Hormone production MAY contribute to aggression

  12. I think it’s my responsibility to neuter ALL of my dogs, regardless of what breed they are.

Maybe this guy thinks it’s “especially” important to neuter a pitbull because 1) There are way too many homeless dogs, especially pitbulls, and 2) He doesn’t want to be responsible for finding GOOD homes for a bunch of puppies who are epecially at risk of ending up with ASSHOLE owners who would fight them.

  13. I was at the dog park today, and someone sold his last pitbull puppy for $500. His dog had six. $3000, THAT”S why they don’t neuter them. $3000 would buy a lot of crack.
    How do you combat that?
