Wow, I’m not sure I’m convinced that “That One” is a racist statement, but somebody sure is working fast:

  1. Love it, the taking ownership.

    2 comments though:
    1. The “O” should be capitalized– “Thatone”, as one word, sounds like his has something to do with scientology

    2. Any song ideas around this?
-Mary Tyler Moore theme–substitute “you girl” for “That One”.
-“One” by U2, but “That One” for “One Heart” etc.
-Speaking of Heart, how about using a Heart song, since they dissed McCain for using their song? Hmmm.. “Barracuda” is 4 syllables, “That One” is only two, this will be a work in progress

  2. ……as used in most families and offices – it is a term of dissent combined with scathing humor or even endearment ….

    get a life

with the global great depression kicking in about the time Obama becomes president, and no one to blame, finger pointing will be stupid, this is going to be a rocky road

expect a run on the dollar sometime soon as all those trillions and trillions and trillions of floating international dollars sell to go to gold

expect states to go bankrupt quickly, as they have no cash reserves … thousands of smaller cities and counties to follow

expect astonishing cut backs in ALL services provided by state, county and city, no money to pay for them, no new taxes possible

Iceland and Britan are in the process of nationalizing their banking systems – we should follow, not just loan banks money

forms of socialism are at our door, all you newly minted progressives, banking, health care, the collapse of the old style laissez faire economy has opened the door to radical change

get ready for years of economic turmoil in the western style capitalist democracies

in all the chaos, who will buy America for ten cents on the dollar? My guess is obvious, petrol rich purses old money that is secure

  3. I totally love it!!! Finally, we have a Democrat and a base in the party that is willing to take the fight to the Republican’s. Sure wish Christine Gregiore would do that……

  4. Not exactly the proverbial Carvillian anvil is it, though?

Silly. Try to convince America that Obama is the grownup we want running the country not some aggrieved t-shirt slogan victim.

  5. Racist? Oh, please. My neighbors are an old nelly couple in their late ’60s who affectionately refer to each other as, “That One.” As in, “That One thinks happy hour starts at 4:30!” It goes without saying that they’re the most fun neighbors on this dull street.

I’m not surprised some thin-skinned morons want to turn this into something black and white. Anyone who watched the first debate from the opening five minutes KNOWS these two do no like each other and it was simply a matter of McCain being too much of a snob to say Obama’s name – an old man diss, if you will. But it has NOTHING to do with black/white, cry-wolfers.

  6. It’s not necessarily racist. But it is diminutive, which is the point. Was McCain going to refer to himself as “this one”? No, that would sound childish.

  7. “That one” may not be about race, but what it IS about is McCain’s intense, childish, personal contempt for for Obama. Whether that contempt is about race, well, you decide.

  8. “That one” is a phrase often heard in the 1920s or ’30s, or in nursing homes. Kind of like saying “medical errors… as they call them.” That’s what they’re called, grandpa. What do you call them?

Some old people pay attention to the change around them and some stay frozen in time.

  9. Endlessly parsing every awkwardly-phrased word your opponent said trying to tease out some hidden bias seems more like a Hillary thing than an Obama thing.

  10. It was probably a brain fart – he couldn’t remember what he was talking about.

“That one” is the singular form of “those people” or “you people.”

  11. http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1008/GOP_likes_that_one_too.html

Ben Smith reports that the GOP are going to try to turn “That One” into an anti-Obama meme:

“The most memorable line of the night belonged to John McCain. McCain pointed out that “That One” vote for the 05 energy bill. Look for Republicans to note in coming days that “That One” also voted for higher taxes at least 94 times; “That One” has associations with unrepentant terrorists, etc…”

  12. What a wank. If this is the worst that the attack media can pull out on Mr McCain’s performance, then I stand by my statement that he did a good job representing himself and his side.

  13. Sounded racist to me when I saw it live, and I was startled by it, but I’m white. I’d like to know how a black man feels about the remark.

  14. Racist or not, the point is that the comment OBJECTIFIED Obama.

McCain has made his disdain for Obama no secret (not looking at him, not referring to him by name); he looks as if he’s pissed off that his POW status doesn’t afford him instant access to the Oval Office. He has to campaign- and against a kid even!

By referring to Obama as ‘that one,’ he’s referred to him as an object worthy of derision, not a candidate, not a person.

    Where’s Mudede?

  15. In response to Bob Dobalina (#9), the example of your cute neighbors doesn’t really fit. They love each other and use “That one” as a term of endearment. McCain doesn’t love Obama. He can barely look at him. Try saying, “You suck!” to your best buddy when he drinks the last shot of whiskey. Now say it to your enemy, for whatever reason. Totally different, you know it.
