It’s 5:30 in the freaking morning. I don’t know what that woman on the left is smiling about. One of the flight attendants is walking up and down the aisle slamming the overhead bins shut. Good morning to you too, lady. Off to Baltimore.

  1. I adore a good train ride! I know it takes three days to get to the east coast, but I don’t care. That’s three days of relaxing for me.

Of course Dan’s schedule is much too full for that sort of thing, and I fear he may be a bit too Type A to enjoy it anyway. When you take the train, you must remember to pack your patience ( a roll of duct tape and a stash of tequila can come in mighty handy as well)

  2. So, not that I’m keeping track, or anything, but doesn’t this make it almost a month that you’ve been on the road? It’s like that George Clooney movie…

  3. @12
the jet-set (read: politicians and up-to-the-minute reporters) are either heavily sedated or just merely proud whackos without much care for their health, or… in the case of Dan, drumroll…Superfag!

  4. @6, and if you pay for a sleeper your meals are included and you get a complementary bottle (small) of champaign. There’s also a complementary cheese and wine tasting event on the train where one person from each table wins a bottle of wine. All on the Empire Builder train.

  5. If I’ve been following along correctly, Dan’s departing from New York, not Seattle, which means the train isn’t five days, it’s only a little over two hours to Baltimore, and that’s station-to-station, no airport trips or hassles whatever. MUCH quicker and friendlier than flying, in other words; you could be in downtown Baltimore before you’d even be boarding the plane in New York. Acela eff tee double-you.

  6. Bless her fucking heart, that woman has the true Tracy Turnblad spirit, though I guess she ran out of Aqua Net. I hate flying so much that if genuinely happy person is aboard it makes a world of difference to me.

You fit perfectly in her universe, too:

    TRACY
There’s the flasher who lives next door
There’s the bum on his bar room stool
There’s the laptop gay dad flipping me off

    ENSEMBLE
    (He’s all adam’s apple! Holy mack’rel!)

  7. @19, you weren’t curious enough about the clip to look up any background about it before commenting? Never heard of John Waters in your world, I’m guessing. 1988 movie, recently a Broadway show (and a hideous movie remake)…set in segregated 1962 Baltimore…hair hoppers…”Negro Day”…Motormouth Maybelle…I bet you’d enjoy it…here, let me help…

  8. Flying from Seattle to Baltimore. Layover in Detroit. Insane flight attendant today… but we bonded when I jumped up and caught a heavy bag that was falling out of an overhead bin and onto a woman with her arm in a cast.

  9. Happy Trails Dan. Godspeed.

Just chillax and everything will be craptastic.

You know those old sayings, go with the flow, que sera sera, c’est la vie, don’t worry be happy. Use these as your mantra and await your transformation. Or something.

Hell, I don’t really know what I’m talking about but it sounded good.

  10. OMAR LITTLE: It ain’t what you takin’, it’s who you takin’ from, ya feel me? How you expect to run with the wolves come night when you spend all day sparring with the puppies?

  11. Wishing you traveling mercies, Dan.

Ps. Some of us can’t help but smile. I don’t even recognize that I’m doing it. Consequently, I’ve started earning some lovely happy lines on my face. Which is better than angry ones, in my opinion.

  12. I was forced Into smiling during my Marriott years, and never got over it. But I’d rather look like Barbara Bel Geddes than Leona Helmsley.
