A google search of “boycott Glenn Beck” turns up around 118,000 results, a number that no doubt spiked after his most recent racist tangent. When Beck said that President Obama “has a deep-seated hatred for white people,” (then minutes later said “I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people!” What!?) he no doubt fueled an already wide and intense desire for him to STFU. Petitions and blogs called for boycotts of his advertisters, which apparently worked, eventually finding multiple prominent campaigns pulling their ads from the show’s slots (most simply moving them elsewhere on Fox). There was, however, a catch:

[T]he growing list of advertisers that Beck boycotters publicly count as bowing to their demands say they never intended to advertise on the show in the first place. They … include SC Johnson[, Proctor & Gamble] and Progressive Insurance. All three are among those right-wing bloggers and tweeters are now calling their supporters to boycott for “pulling ads” from the host’s show.

So now we have groups boycotting advertisers who buy ads on the Glenn Beck Show and groups boycotting advertisers who pull their ads from the the Glenn Beck show because they were being boycotted for having ads there in the first place. Sounds like the real losers here are the advertisers, who get screwed out of revenue either way.

  1. In the long run, it will hurt Beck’s program more as future advertisers won’t want to be entagled in that kind of mess.

If you are boycotted either way, why would you ever consider advertising in the first place?

  2. The advertisers never lose. They are the big money players here, and they will come out on top.

The real losers here are you and me. We were hopeful that President Obama would advance some meaningful change for our fucked social welfare system. We were crossing our fingers that we would finally see some progress toward national health care. We we optimistic that a smart new administration would mean an end to the endless media babble that silences all rational conversation in this country. Wrong wrong wrong.

Glenn Beck is just the latest opportunistic asshole to make big money from American ignorance. Business as usual. We’re doomed.

  3. A Little Context:

Google “boycott Keith Olbermann” and get 84,300 results
Google “boycott Rachel Maddow” and get 52,700 results
Google ” Impeach Barack Obama” and get 597,000 results

  4. Hhhmmmm. I have it on good authority that y’all were ‘Slogtipped’ this tasty little tidbit last night, by a loyal Slog commentator….

    *sulk*

  5. “the real losers are the advertisers” Hmmm. I really never thought I would have read those words in’The Stranger’

I sincerely hope they were typed with tongue firmly in cheek, otherwise I’d suggest that you may need to insert your foot into your mouth, and/or remove your head from your rear.

And to sloggers: boycott The Stranger!!!

  6. We switched our auto and home insurance from GEICO today because they pulled their ads from Glenn Beck.

GEICO is going to lose several thousands dollars from us alone now, per year.

  7. Jennie @9, you should probably boycott your mental health case worker while you’re at it. He doesn’t seem to be helping one bit.

  8. So, here, in Canada, you can order your American news a la carte. I had, by choice, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. I can tolerate a lot for the sake of hearing many viewpoints. I cancelled Fox today. I know there are people here who wouldn’t watch Fox on a dare, but pushing me to drop the channel surely signifies a new low. There surely must be American centre-left, centre-right, genuine centre-centrists who are fed up, too!

  9. Do any of you Beck-haters remember something called free speech?? IT SEEMS NOT! Pulling ads is fine by me, it’s their right…but in the end it only says we don’t care about free speech, something else Obama thinks he ought to dictate. YOUR rights (too) are being pissed-on by Obama but you are too blind to to even see it!! Obama’s arrogance smells like cow crap. But then again so many of you Obama lovers are so far up his butt hole you don’t even smell his crap anymore. Way to go!!

  10. Beck is coming to Qwest field on September 26th. Anyone down for a protest? Lets let the world know Seattle doesn’t stand with Teabaggers/Birthers/Racists/Nutbags, ect. Beck has the right to spew his vile words but we have the right to say they are wrong.

Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you….

  11. I find it funny when the Left HATES Bush when he was actually a Liberal and NOT a Conservative. He spent 400 billion dollars on free prescriptions for seniors..did more for AIDS in Africa than any other president and last but not least..LIBERATED Iraqi people from totalitarian rule of Saddam Hussein. We went from 8 years of a liberal to a radical…linear thinkers can’t think outside the box..So how’s that CHANGE working? Patriot ACT? Don’t ask don’t tell? Troop surge in Afghanistan? Majority of this Country is center right…only 20% are Che loving Marxist Capitalist pig haters.

  12. Wouldn’t you expect if someone surrounded them selfโ€™s with people who did drugs or were crooks, did drugs or were crocks themselves? Well Obama has said repeatedly “If you want to know were I stand politically look at the people I surround myself withโ€. A racist preacher, a socialist, a communist. You should all be looking, he is telling you who he is. You just won’t see it.
Wake up people before it’s too late.
