I had always thought that the Frisbee was something that simply fell from the sky—one day it wasn’t there; the next day it was. Now I’m hearing that this silly object was not a found object but actually had an inventor; meaning, it was an idea in the mind before it was a thing in reality:
The man who invented the Frisbee, one of the world’s most popular toys, has died at his home in Utah aged 90.
Next thing they’ll be telling me is that the inventor of the ball died in Surprise, Nebraska.

Charles, it was originally a pie tin, from the Frisbie Pie Company. That’s where he got the idea, and the name. It was certainly not “an idea in the mind” first.
But but but . . . pie tins had to be an idea first. Oh, fuck it, there’s no competing with Charles when it comes to crazy.
Charles’ crazy is great IRL because he actually gets to a point consistently. Unlike online where he clearly gets distracted by other assignments.
Which is why it’s funny.
@1, you and i have different ideas about what an idea is. recall these words: “he got the idea.”
Oh, don’t get me wrong, BC, I think it’s fucking hilarious also. Somehow I don’t think that’s his intent, though.
Funniest Mudede post ever.
Meanwhile, a Frisbee is hardly silly.
Ask any Golden Retriever. It’s serious business.
i agree with seattle whatever. cute post.
O
@4, no, he didn’t get an idea. He WATCHED a pie tin sail across a field. People had been playing the tossing game with pie tins forever. His only idea was changing to soft plastic and marketing them as toys, not pie tins. The person who had the idea — throw a pie tin upside down with a spinning motion so it flies — is unknown to us.
Not so silly to these people:

You know…. For kids!
I hereby declare that all things Charles likes are “silly”. And I guess the proper destiny for ideas in the mind is to combine with other unrelated ideas in the mind until they are the consistency of oatmeal, and then get posted onto Slog.
balls were ‘invented’ by dung beetles.
Define “silly”.
I am old enough to have owned a “Pluto Platter” as a child.
Before he died, I heard he threw his frisbee repeatedly at a lighthouse.
I’m surprised you think the Frisbee is silly, Charles. Throwing the spinning disk successfully involves incorporating several fundamental properties of physics with sophisticated eye-hand-arm and leg coordination. Have you ever tried it?
I was so poor as a child, we had to use pie tins instead of frisbees.
@10,
Marty McFly!
dammit…ya beat me to the Back to the Future reference!
When a ball dreams, it dreams it is a frisbee.
Sometimes i wonder why is that frisbee getting bigger? And then it hits me…
