This woman leaning out from behind the telephone pole to see how long the line was at the Cherry Street Food Bank yesterday afternoon was one of the lucky ones. Even though she had about half a block to go (and the line was moving pretty slowly), behind her, the line went around the corner and all the way back to James Street.

Elderly immigrants, working-age couples, young children, single parents, unemployed folk… all in that line. And I know that people are hungry all year—and we should give to charities like Northwest Harvest all year—but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t kill me to see kids four, five, and six years old standing for an hour at the food bank a few days before Christmas. “In the last three years, the number of hungry families in Washington State has nearly doubled,” Northwest Harvest explains. You can contribute to Northwest Harvest, which supplies the Cherry Street Food Bank, (and stick it to Gawker) by donating right here.

i would have donated weeks ago if it wasn’t for the stupid “ih8gawker@thestranger.com” email address — way to drive a non-existent and petty rivalry into the ground and shoot yourself in the foot during the process
i like gawker and gizmodo and jalopnik and kotaku and, i’ll say it, jezebel occasionally
You should e-mail that picture to Fox.
Of course, those are just people too lazy to pull themselves up by their own old, worn-out boot straps. The job-creators have tons of work for them.
That makes my heart hurt.
Jesus fuck.
pole, bubbeleh, not ‘poll’.
@1 You don’t give to people in need because of a stupid internet game? Your morality is blinding. Ass.
@1 Grow up.
@1 so give some money on fucking Gawker’s side if they mean that much to you. Jesus Christ Scrooge! Why don’t you go and watch a movie on Xmas while you’re at it! PS: I like deadspin but that didn’t stop me from dropping some cash so hungry ppl can eat!!
@1 grrrrrr.
PS is Gawker even doing a drive themselves? I visited their site and didn’t see anything.
If you’re more moved by the sight of young children in a long line for a food bank than by the whiny tale of a man seeing a movie by his lonesome in a packed cinema house, you have your heart in the right place.
Oh my God. This really is the 1930’s again.
@1 the email is now: awesome@thestranger.com. So go donate now.
(I have a small monthly donation already set up that I do not get receipts for, just line item charges in my bank statement. This photo moved me to donate extra and that’s when I found out about the email change)
Charity is not going to solve this problem, even though it does help people immediately (if temporarily). Capitalism requires unemployment to keep wages down and homelessness to keep housing prices up.
You can donate $10 to Northwest Harvest by texting “endhunger” to 80888 on your cellphone. I just did it. It’s so easy.
Use your technology for good!
@14,
How does homelessness keep housing prices up?
