Stray dogs in India’s financial capital, Mumbai (Bombay) should be sterilised not killed, says former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson.
Animal lover Ms Anderson intervened on the dogs’ behalf in a letter to the city authorities.
“Dogs cannot use condoms but… they can be ‘fixed’ painlessly,” she wrote.
The star learnt of the dogs’ plight after Mumbai’s High Court recently said strays should be killed as they were a “permanent nuisance” to the public.
Dog love is limitless. No cat owner would go to some faraway city and tell the people how to treat their stray cats.

One thing I’ve noticed in some non-Western countries is that, while dogs are hated and reviled, cats are tolerated and often loved.
oh Charles, how wrong you are. i just adopted a cat from some rescue agency and i had to initial no less than 30 clauses in the agreement about the cat not going outside, being fed wet food for urethral health, no access to balconies (they can jump!!) etc etc etc. cat lovers will absolutely travel the world and tell people how to treat their cats.

You say that Ms. Anderson is telling others “how to treat” dogs. But that seems like sloppy phrasing. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that she is telling them “how to avoid killing” dogs? Or at the very least “how to treat the dog problem”?
At any rate, pandering to the “cats vs. dogs” crowd for relevancy/comments seems silly. Perhaps I missed your post when Miley Cyrus tried to tell China “how to treat” dolphins, or your post on the topic of Jane Goodall’s recommendations for “treating” gorilla populations in Africa? Or when animals rights’ groups regularly object to the “treatment” of cougar and wolf populations (cats and dogs) through culling?
The sad truth–also at work in mass genocides and wars–is that death is the cheap, easy and clear solution for any living thing that is considered a “nuisance” by other living things with the power to kill it. This will remain the case until we are able to afford intrinsic value to all living things instead of merely assigning an extrinsic value–or no value at all–as wards, belongings or “nuisances.”

Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia and home to over 1 million people, is located in Mumbai. Given the daily humanitarian crisis, it is amazing that anyone is concerned about the stray dogs.
@17: Insisting that Mumbai spend government money on the fruitless endeavor of trying to capture and neuter its entire population of stray dogs (who will presumably then go on to live long, fulfilling lives while troubling no-one) while letting its people starve is par for the course for PETA spokesbots like Pamala Anderson. It is no coincidence that people like her who live in a vapid bubble of privilege value the lives of dogs far above the lives of poor people — after all, she probably has daily interactions with real live dogs.
The beauty of PETA is that she can actually feel like some kind of role model for saying things like this.
I spent three weeks in Marrakech with a bunch of Swedes who insisted on bringing stray kittens home to our hotel. There are a lot of stray cats in Marrakech, and a lot of westerners trying to save them.

@4…What is happening in Mubai and elsewhere (say ALL OVER MEXICO ans South America) is really f-ed up. Stray dogs (sometimes abandoned when owners tire of them, others born strays) are rounded up and shot, drowned or poisoned.
This was common practice in Yelapa, MX where I used to vacay. The federales would storm the beach, round up the dogs and fire or do a mass poisoning. Too bad if your owned dog was caught in the mix.
While Fun Bags is not one of my favorite people, her heart and boobs are in the right place.
