Vote sets the stage for potentially tumultuous negotiations with House leaders over the final shape of the legislation. While the overall dollar amounts are similar, the Senate version includes $110 billion more in tax cuts and allocates fewer funds to school construction and state governments.

How I hate centrism.

Long ago, Marx wrote about capitalists and the proletariat forming two great camps in European politics. Today in America, we are witnessing the stabilization of two great camps in American politics. One camp is an alliance between the white intelligentsia and minorities (Latinos, blacks, Asians, gays, Jews); the other camp, rich whites and poor whites. Obama, of course, represents the former alliance—indeed, he is the physical embodiment of that alliance, being at once an intellectual and a minority. A meaning of the stimulus package that is not connected with the real struggle between these camps is an empty meaning.

  1. Those centrists have power because the Democrats gave it to them by adopting the supermajority cloture rule, in accord with Senate custom, which ain’t change. And a president who hands out a cabinet post to a senator who doesn’t even vote for the Democratic proposal — what can you say?

Around the rest of the world, the names for this kind of power-giveaway activity would be:

    “stupid”
    “self disempowering”
    “codepednent”
    “Quisling”
    “spineless”
“hidebound traditionalists clinging to archaic Senate customs”
    “Vichy” or
    “appeasement.”

  2. Note too: the middle class is still disenfranchised.

Palin was the only candidate representing them.

She was blackballed by the elites and their media.

Because only she could represent real change — rule by the majority.

  3. @7 Palin represented uninformed hicks who shoot wolves from helicopters for fun. That’s not middle class, it’s the shallow end of the American genepool. I’m all for real change unless it means that those people are running the country.

  4. “Marx wrote about capitalists and the proletariat forming two great camps in European politics”
