Don’t despair, journalism-school graduates! Your fancy diploma will still get you in the door at one venerable US company—Oscar Meyer, which just announced that it’s accepting resumes for one-year spots driving the Wienermobile (above). Bonus points if you have a BA in communications or journalism, even more bonus points if you have “a friendly personality” and “boundless enthusiasm.” The company typically gets more than 1,000 applications for 12 spots—making your odds of getting a job, as the Boston Globe points out, statistically worse than getting into Harvard! On the bright side, you’re probably more likely to get into Harvard than get a job at a newspaper these days, so why not give it a shot? Position closes January 31, so get a move on!
The Future of Journalism is Driving the Wienermobile

Maybe journalists would have less to feel sorry for themselves about if they’d been less complicit in convincing everyone that Iraq had WMDs and participated in the 9/11 attack, or that pit bulls are going to eat all your kids or that we have raised a generation of so-called “welfare queen” “crack babies.” Journalists deal in hysteria and sensationalism. It’s all they know.
Am I the only one that has noticed that the ones setting the record straight are not journalists?
“Every journalist who is not too stupid or too full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible.” JM
And you get to drive it in glamorous events like the Baltimore Christmas Parade just down the street from Balt-O-Matt’s house!
Seriously though, is there any better future career for ECB? She’s hit her peak.
@1,
Unfortunately, the newspapers and “journalists” likely to survive this meltdown peddle that kind of sensationalism and more.
For a second, I thought ECB was talking about Wienerschnitzel. I loved that place. I used to get something smothered in butter there. I don’t remember what it was, but it was delicious.
Goddamnit, Keshmeshi, that was my HAND.
This is good advice for the editor of the UW Daily …
It’s that or do tech support in India.
The Wienermobile is a national treasure, and you don’t just give the driving job to any stupid buttcrack who applies.
i saw the Wienermobile get pulled over by the police last week. it was strange.
@9, cops get hungry too.
I remember when some previous incarnation of the Wienermobile (without the aerodynamic headlights and the giant front windows) used to deliver a midget in chef’s whites (before that became politically incorrect) to grocery stores near you, so he could impart exciting recipes to the hausfraus in the meat department.
Somewhere I still have my wiener-whistle, and just imagine what a formative experience it was to blow THAT thang.
Franks for helping us spread the word, Erica! If any of you future Hotdoggers want to see what life is like in the Wienermobile, check out our new blog http://www.hotdoggerblog.com.
