_45534483_r900059-optical_image_of_galaxies_in_the_virgo_cluster-spl.jpgReseachers have seen the best evidence yet for a pair of black holes orbiting each other within the same galaxy. While such “binary systems” have been postulated before, none has ever been conclusively spotted.

The new black hole pair is dancing significantly closer than the prior best binary system candidate. The work, published in the journal Nature, is in line with the theory of growth of galaxies, each with a black hole at its centre.

The theory has it that as galaxies near each other, their central black holes should orbit each other until merging together. But evidence for black holes nearing and orbiting has so far been scant. As matter falls into black holes, it emits light of a characteristic colour that in turn gives information about the direction in which the black hole is moving.

  5. Charles Mudede shook his daughter awake. A familiar terror cleared the fog from her sleepy mind as she saw her father’s yellow eyes shining dully in the darkness of her room. He sprang from her bed and threw open her blue Toy Story curtains, then fixed his gaze on her. “Look!” he demanded. She quietly looked out of the window.
    The stars glimmered faintly above the yellow fuzz of the streetlight. Charles Mudede looked up, his hot breath clouding on the icy glass. “See those stars?” he asked. His daughter nodded.
    “They are fucking,” he whispered.
    Father and daughter sat motionless, silhouetted against the dingy window. Charles Mudede did not notice when his daughter began to cry.

  7. Though black holes seem to be the ultimate ending for a galaxy, there is something about them that is affirming. Something that says rebirth.

    They are like recycling centers for galaxies.
