What’s with all the people today walking around in jeans, long pants, and head-to-toe black outfits? Did they miss the memo that it’s the hottest day ever in Seattle? They’re everywhere. I saw a dozen on my way to work and a dozen more going for lunch. Schmader thinks they might have “funky skin diseases.” Are they going to melt? Look at this guy…

He must be made of Teflon. And the guy on the corner wearing jeans and a hoodie, my god.

it’s a neo/matrix thing.. you wouldn’t unnerstand.
It’s to represent the black emptiness of their souls.
I wouldn’t have gotten dressed at all today if i didn’t have to go to work
I’m one of those people! No hoodie though. But my reason is a lack of shorts. I don’t have any. If I did wear them though, I might wind up on slog as ‘the guy in work shoes, black socks, and shorts.’ God bless the iPhone.
He’s afraid that if he wears shorts, he may blind you with his lily white legs. I like how he reveals only his upper left arm as a testament to how white he really is.
i have a friend whose knees i have never seen due to embarrassment over the surgery scars on them. i’m sure she’s rockin’ a pair of jeans right now.
maybe, just maybe, its his work uniform.
I wore jeans today because I already wore the lightest work-pants I own this week. But I got here at 8am before it got hot, I’m in an air-conditioned office and I brought non-work-appropriate shorts to wear home.
Not sure about this guy but, in a hot day, I would much rather wear pants. I hate sitting down on a seat wearing shorts only to get all sticky because of my sweat and the sweat of everybody that has sat there before. Yuck.
I love my legs and am not ashamed to show them, just don’t want sticky legs. Sticky legs are icky.
For all the time I lived in Seattle, I never owned a pair of shorts or a skirt that came above my knee.
I grew up in Phoenix and never wore anything but jeans, even in summer. Now I wear shorts until the high gets below 75.
They’re hoping to be featured on the “Goths in Hot Weather” photo blog: http://www.gothsinhotweather.com
Lived in Austin for three years and wore jeans exclusively. Now that I am back in Seattle I wear shorts all the time. I am confusing to myself.
Who’s the tall drink of water in the white tank top? Oh, hey, it’s my cousin!
If I don’t give a shit, I’d go out in my boxers with no shirt. But I think people will look at me funny and I live on Capitol Hill.
It’s what I wear at work instead of a suit and tie – black t-shirt, jeans – but in SoCal this is way more common the all black experience, and it gets a LOT hotter down there.
I’ve considered wearing jeans a couple times in the last couple weeks, just because they pump the AC at work so much higher than I like.
Working for the City, they have a ridiculous, byzantine policy that precludes us from wearing shorts for my job, even though it requires that I work outside almost all day.
Women on this job, however, can wear skirts. It this keeps up, I may just have to put on a face and buy me a few kickly little sundresses at Ross.
18: (C)Ross Dress for Less!
Some of us only own black clothing.
Bollo!
I have heard that for some people with schizophrenia there is something in their brain that hijacks a sense of temperature. Also, a tendency to redundantly layer clothing, which may or may not be associated with the sense of temperature. If you see someone with a bunch of clothing layered on, they could be mentally ill or homeless, or both.
Some people have over active thyroid glands. Sweaty people wear black in summer.
my office is an ice cave and, more generally, shorts aren’t for adult males (discussed recently at http://www.theawl.com/tag/shorts)
I strongly suspect they don’t own anything but black jeans and black t-shirts.
I saw a woman in a sweater yesterday. It was what, 97 degrees?
i wore all black today becuase i do lights and it’s dress blacks for me. i would prefer to wear all white, as i sometimes do. but i can’t. so in my case it’s a work thing. some of these people may be bartenders, security or production, some may be the ONE. i dunno
People in Seattle don’t know how to dress well in normal weather; I wouldn’t expect a sudden burst of couture-appropriate behavior to blossom in this withering heat.
I have psoriasis, which you might call a “funky skin disease”. It’s not dangerous (or contagious), it just looks like I have road rash. But I bravely wore shorts today, noone seemed to notice. Maybe I’m not a freak.
I have mostly black clothes, not because of the darkness of my soul, but ’cause I’m lazy, travel a lot & everything matches that way. There’s summer lightweight blacks, though; all cotton. Plus: you don’t want to see everyone’s legs/arms. If someone’s wearing too much clothes mebbe there’s a reason.
I was in black shoes, black pants, and a black top today because I had to work. We can’t wear skirts without pantyhose, or even sandals, so anything else was right out.
When the temp goes above 85, there is no dressing to be hip anymore. Its every man for himself. Some things are more important than cred.
@21 ‘ellllo!
Thats me! Teflon? How would that keep me cool? I’m just naturally frosty.
I need to check the dress code at work to see if a kilt is ok.
i saw a teenage doofus wearing a ski cap at 3:30 yesterday.
I actually have had to wear a sweater to work every day this week because our A/C is cranked so high and I get cold. Of course, when I step outside I feel like I’m on fire.
Some of us can’t wear shorts to work and do not have facilities to change into work clothes at work. Additionally, I do not own shorts. I’m 5’5, and whenever I wear shorts, I always feel like they’re too long and like I look goofy. Also, I grew up in New Mexico and didn’t wear shorts there either, because the second you wandered into a building, you were fucking freezing.
I have to wear long pants for work.
Some guys think it’s either jeans, shorts, or slacks (sometimes khaki, but ususally black). Have you never heard of fucking linen?
I have seen too many people wearing fleece and long sleeves this week too and it baffles me. Is there a chill in the air that only they can feel? Last night in Cal Anderson park, we saw a man in long sleeves and he was holding his shirt closed, like he was chilly. And it was 92 out still! WTF?
Nothing like taking pictures of random people and posting them on the internet for public ridicule. Privacy? Not here! Sorry my clothes don’t meet your standards, you judgemental losers.
@40: Amen. Summerweight materials, gents.
@42: Privacy? On a public street?
It’s not that stifling temperature-wise in Toronto, but there have been days when it’s been hitting the low 30s in terms of humidity. Even in the rain, it’s warm, warm. Yet I’ve seen women in knee-length trenchcoats (??) and rubber boots.
Ladies, I know rain-wear is really in and cute now. But just put on flip flops and towel off your feet when you get to work. Water doesn’t hurt, and in stuffy boots, your feet would be worse off sweaty and smelly instead of just wet.
