Did you know that we curate a news calendar here? It’s true. While wonky political meetings and community forums are the bread and butter of the news calendar (for example, the Sound Transit hearing on downtown bus fares this week), I’m working on throwing a wider range of fun, weird, edifying, and (mostly) free events into the mix. Here are a few that are coming up this week:
Tonight: Yelp has been hosting a series of for-charity, 21+, wildlife-themed parties at the FRED Wildlife Refuge this month under the title “Yelp’s A Zoo,” each with a different theme. Tonight brings “Yelpin’ in the Jungle” (just drink that in for a moment), which begins at 7 pm. I’m honestly not exactly sure what “A Zoo” is—details are scant—but it’s free, and nonprofit group The World Is Fun will be selling adult beverages for $1 a pop. Plus, app-based town car service Uber will give you a free ride to the event if you’re a new member. RSVP required. You’re encouraged to dress up as an animal.
Wednesday: Awesome civic engagement nonprofit and expert sticker distributors Washington Bus will be hosting their Welcome Wagon Summer Launch Party at Bus HQ on Capitol Hill. Come by for free dinner, a lively discussion on marriage equality, and strategies for getting young voters active. New Bus Fellows will also be announced. The whole thing starts at 6 pm and is free.
Thursday: So, this isn’t a party per se, but anytime you’re invited to go on a digital tour through the universe in an inflatable planetarium, you’re free to treat it as such. The Whidby GeoDome Project will be setting up their portable, inflatable, 13’x25′ dome at Seattle Center starting at 10 am, and giving half-hour long, immersive presentations about the universe and our place in it using state-of-the-art visualizations projected on the inside. Tickets are $7-$9, and can be purchased on site. Party on.
