  1. @3, that’s managers and non-union. Like all the accounting, supervisors, IT, etc.

And don’t worry – the unions are going to be hit up next.

  2. Somebody’s newspaper needs a financial audit. Even with declining circulation, a newspaper still gets much of their revenue from advertising. Even with businesses struggling, I can’t imagine they’ve lost that much advertising. It just looks like Blethen and Co don’t manage their money very well.

  3. @7, believe it. The classified-supported business model has been vaporized. The revenue losses are gigantic. And it’s in the entire industry, not just here. See Detroit, Chicago, etc. Blethen has actually done no worse than many other publishers, in terms of taking on more dept than it turns out he could sustain in a down market. He just didn’t have a deep corporate cushion.

  4. Just out of curiosity how many total employees does the Times have?

It seems I read at least three stories this year where between 100 and 300 employees have been laid off or taken early retirement or something. That means like 800 people have lost their jobs at the Times this year, and this follows the downsizing from the strike a few years ago.

How many employees does the Times have? 10,000? 50,000 ? 1 million?
